Hi, I was wondering if I could ask what were peoples experiences with SU carb needles running
a triple 1 3/4 " setup for a hot holden 6? I'm new to these and I was was wondering if there was one type in particular I should
go for or is it more trial and error?

Cheers,

Adam.

adam,

if the set of su's came off a holden six and you can verify this off the seller then just set about getting them re built. There would be a standard main jet ( if su's have them) size. The next thing is the needles and depending on the motor, cam , inlet manifold and head and exhaust , then you just then start tunning the car once it's running.

It's best to get it running and then put on the Dyno and see where the exhaust gas air/fuel mixture is sitting and power curve. but ensure that you are close to a base holden 6 setting before you start this.

only then do you start to fiddle with the needles and the shape of the needles to get optional output , or you just get close and live with any negative that you cannot iron out.

Ensure that you get someone who knows " what the F%$@@#k " they are doing with these, get the re conditioner to write down the settings so you have a base line to work to.

three cents , good luck and when you are selecting needles you go here and then start punching in the needle and then search for a close one

G

Try RH needles and 100 thou jets. start off rich and lean off until it starts to boogie. use a carby synchroniser and check plugs until you get a nice brown colour. cheers,

Thanks very much guys, as always a wealth of knowledge and experience here. I've just purchased the OA6 from SU Midel as a baseline and take it from there.

Cheers, Adam.

I'm using TW, as far as I know they were std on Austin 1800's. Had them on the 179, and still work well on the 202.

And I use a Gunson's ColourTune to get the carbs balanced.

Many moons ago, I remember machining up my own custom needles for the triple SU's on my 208 red six.

We had it on the dyno first doing basic power runs and trying various off the shelf needles. My tuner then gave me the "ideal specs" for the perfect needles for my setup, so I went off and made them on a lathe. The engine was unbelievably sharp once finally tuned with the new needles.

Hopefully most people can get away with off the shelf items though, otherwise it's a pain in the ass.

Through all of the tuning i've had done on my engine i've never actually checked the needle profile, however they do have TP stamped in them. They did let the engine still run a little rich which was fine (for running the gas - no lean out) and throttle response was excellent. I'd be interested to grab some of the OA6 & 7 needles & check profiles against mine, but with all the smart buggers here using them, maybe ther're the go.

Had a hotch potch of springs in them previously, but yeah, updated to the ones with a lick of red on them.

The TP needles have a similar profile to the OA6/OA7 but leaner from about half way. It will depend on what each engines needs in fuel, but the OA6/OA7 is a good starting point.

Yep, what he said...
Excellent chart for checking needles.
Might grab a couple of different sets having seen that.
Cheers
