Road-worthiness of MPH speedo?

Wow imagine trying to explain that to a cop when he pulls you over for the hole in your dash

You wouldn't get away with it. Here are the ACT regs and I am sure the rest of Oz are in line:

 

1.43 Speedometers

(1) A motor vehicle (other than a trailer) built after June 1974 that can be driven faster than 50km/h on a level road must be fitted with a speedometer.

(2) The speedometer must—

(a) indicate the speed at which the vehicle is being driven in kilometres per hour; and

(B) indicate, when the vehicle is travelling faster than 40km/h, a speed that is not over 10% less than the actual speed; and

© be readily visible to the driver.

 

I originally thought it was about 1974.

Interesting but that's not an ADR is it?

 

Back in the 80's NSW had tougher anti - pollution laws than what the ADR's called for.

No it isn'tand that is why it is so hard to determine the rules and regs.  The 2nd addition ADR's were very basic in description and often relied on states and territory regs to clarify things.  Hence the 3rd addtion ADR's being introduced in 1988 to improve and clarify things.  I have been working with them for over 15 years now and still find it difficult at times.  More so now because I have been away from that scene for a good while.

 

I sent an email to the ACT guru here in the ACT asking him to clarify ADR 18 and he said:

 

"This has to go back further than the Consolidated Regulations.  It was a State requirement".

The Consolidated Regs at section 2.16.6 (Feb 1984 edition)

This information only talks of metric systems, I believe that is (as I recall) Australia went metric in 1972. 

 

The consolidated regs were in place before the ADR's and continued on during them for a short while.  They are now replace by the AVSR's.  Very conveluted I tell you.

 

So even he said to me it all works in togther as the ADR was entirely specific and relied on other regs to clarify.  So there may not be an entire answer. The state regs are in place to take up the slack so to speak.

1st July 1974 was the national change over date from MPH to KPH speed signs so it makes sense to require metric only speedos in new cars at the same time.
