Afternoon Everyone

Picked up a 2 door LJ as a project for my eldest son and myself, has been talked about for years but never found the time.

Well here we go,

Problem I have is there is no compliance plate fitted to the vehicle and no engine also (hence no engine number)

I was wondering if it is possible to check if the car not stolen etc before we spend dollars on this thing.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Also reading through some of the post here and appears to be a wealth of experience with these little babies so any info would be much appreciated.

I have attached picture of the vehicle id plate but not real sure how much this tells us.

Model - LJ82911M  Body No - 12712B    Trim - 1849 40X    Paint - 567 13239

Thanks Trevor

Hi Trevor

In respect of older cars, the various state registration authorities work with the stamped Chassis Number. Your car should have stamped number. The same number appears on the ADR plate also. Your car was completed around the 20th of Sept 1972.

You are correct that there is a wealth of experience on this forum. As a matter of interest, some members religiously record the tag details of GTRs and XU-1s as they come up for sale.

Cheers

Bazza

Body Plate says it is a Brisbane car so the chassis number should also be suffixed with a B.

Colour for 567-13239 is phantom grey mk2. Interior 40x is black.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but isn't 40x only available on gtr and xu1???

The model number on the Body ID plate is 82911, so 40X is correct.

Sorry for delay getting back to you and thank you for your reponses so far, the more I dig the more confusing it appears. The chassis number stamped into the L/H inner guard rail is BlLJ24404A but this does not match the info on the plate, also been many years since I laid eyes on a LJ and the front end appear shorter than I remember, could it be a 4 cyl, if I remember correctly they where a HB.

Ok Trevor,

just the heads up on this,  B stands for Brisbane and A stands for Adelaide.

so the number on the inner guard should end in  a B  as SKAP said. John has also said that the inner guard number you have provided ends in A which is at odds with the 12712B number on your tag.

both the inner guard and the tag should at least end in B.

whilst Im not saying anything about the car at all, but you may want to re check the two areas again and confirm based on this.

any way , good to see that another torana is being rescued and hope to see it in the members resto pages,

G

Thanks guys would appear that the id plate is not from the original car, it was in the glovebox at time of purchase, hopefully not a issue, pics of the front end so looks like a 6 cyl thankfully. Sorry guys pic is to big to upload, I will work out and post later but yes the front end comes to a point
