hopefully this is the best forum for this information I need. I have a dear friend in his later years with a red LH SL/R 5000, L34. It is surposed to be as original as they can get. What I can't find anywhere on the net is the engine prefix that starts with L34.  3 days ago I visited him and we went and had a look at the car, in a large shed and covered over, and I looked at the engine number again and it does start with L34. But I can't find any info on this engine starting prefix..All I have seen is the HZ on different forums and sites. Dr Terry seems to be in the know so maybe he could give us a heads up. On a side note, it only has 60,000 on the clock. The compliance plate reads L34 with a build date of 7/74 ....sorry for the lack of info but my question is only about the engine, and yes it does have 2 coils with 2 points in the dizzy.

the engine number will not have L34 on it. If it starts HZ , you are in the right starting place.

if you post the tag numbers, they can be interpreted here for you.

if the engine number has L34 in it, somethings wrong

thanks guys, but still not totally convinced, other sites with all engine codes seem to state that the original L34 engine did not have the HZ prefix. ...I will be up that way in a couple of weeks and will make a visit with my camera and take pics of all identification marks I can find. and the car inside and out.

If an L34 has a replacement engine it could have a different prefix.

Any help you need, just ask. There is a member on this forum, OuterControl, he is the knowledge trust on all things L34. Send him a PM if you want to check numbers or something that is on your car.

and no offence taken, I do realise we all want facts and no BS. As an old bloke I grew up in my teens surrounded by these cars. I had a HG wagon back in those years and with all the work to the engine I finally got to beat my mates A9X in a street drag. Mine was a 6......very proud moment for me.....I also had an LJ Torana standard 6, my favorite car.

Some nice original L34's there, a mate of mine had a chrome yellow one around 1983-1984, it was the HO pack and he had all the paperwork for it, and I always distinctly remember the HZ engine prefix code, and the Z in the VIN tag

I'll second that.

NZ ?

NZ would be the correct prefix for a replacement L34 block.

Just had a thought. Wonder if the engine number commences with HZ 134xx and the HZ prefix is faint making it hard to see?

Bit rich calling a tuff HG  & an A9X 'shopping trolleys' !

I thought that a shopping trolley was better represented by an Hyundai Excel with a wing on the boot.
