first off I apologise as im sure this questions been asked a million times but ive searched the forum and the web high and low and am still none the wiser!

ive been searching for a nice sunday cruiser for over 12 months now but most of the cars that fit my criteria are modified in their states, so im after info from anyone who has transferred a modified vehicle interstate (preferably into SA where im located) will the other states engineering regs pass muster at an SA inspection? or do I just have to try my luck and hope for the best?

would hate to drop the coin on a car and then have to spend more...

cheers Blair

Im not in sa, but from what i gather your mod laws are far less strict than most other states.

Inthink you would be best off finding a local engineer and discussing a few different cars with him.

Cheers

If one car is engineered in one state and you wish to buy and transfer it to another state it must be re- engineered....and that cost more money

Do you have the ability to get it registered in your name in its home state? If so the transfer of a currently registered car that you are the listed owner of is much easier.
Time to rediscover where your friends and relatives live.

yeah no problems paying for it to get checked out, im hoping there is someone in SA who has been through the process and could give me some idea how stringent or if they are in fact less restrictive.

the motor reg website in SA is useless with information and the web is unreliable

will see if i can chase one up but being from a rural area im not that hopeful!

hi Blair bought a car from Melbourne ,& drove it home on a permit and booked in at the vehicle inspection depot through the following wedsite.

www.sa.gov.au then transport, travel and motoring link - vehicle and registration link -vehicle inspection link. that gave the information i needed.

they inspected the car  and check all numbers ,and i didnt show them a engineers report for the car

To give you guys some info and help here ....I live in Sydney and went to look/buy a LS1 4 door Torana in S.A after many phone calls to all departments plus my engineer all the info leads to this ....if I buy a car from another state I have the usual 14 days to change/transfer it into my name and in this time it must be re-engineered in NSW as the car was being re-registered in NSW so it must pass all the requirements of the new engineer in the new state ....
Keep in mind its already passed a engineers inspection once ,so really it should just need a inspection and as long as it meets all the new states engineering laws it should pass .....but as I said in my first post on this topic this will all cost $$$$$.....hope this helps

Thanks kev, have done some more digging on the sa.gov site (thanks Robert) seems like I have two options

1. go through the whole engineering inspection which will be costly and require me making possibly numerous long trips... or

2. take my chances with a standard interstate rego transfer which only requires a numbers check and hope I get a decent local copper whos not on a power trip.

either option is a bit of a gamble as the town I live in gets all the cadets straight out the academy for their training or whatever, so could go either way but im leaning towards the second option...

just had a chat regarding reregistered and  engineering situation.with  john wilson in the act who is a vsccs engineer.if you have had it certified in another state and provided it addresses vsb14 rules ,the rta will accept the cert and vehicle.so what kev has said is spot on zenburger.whats mods are done to your beast buddy

don't have a vehicle atm Maz, but all the cars ive been looking at are modified in one way or another. and buying interstate seems my best option as all the SA torana sellers ive spoken with have their cars priced at sentimental value not real world prices...

I think my best bet is to gamble on a straight rego transfer and hope I get a decent copper when it goes in for a tier2 inspection (numbers check)

It is my understanding that you can only transfer registration into you name if you are a resident in the state that the car is currently registered in. The only time you get to swap registration from one state to another is if you move from one state to another with a car registered in your name in your original state.

If you buy a QLD car and reside in SA then you will have to cancel the registration in QLD. Once you get the car back to SA then you will have to go through the normal registration process. If you want to drive the car home from QLD to SA then you cancel the QLD registration and purchase a permit.

yeah I reckon your right there mate, was just reading through the wording on the sa.gov website, will prob have to get a permit but it will still be just a tier 2 inspection like Robert mentioned in an earlier post, hopefully... fingers crossed...

Three years ago I purchased a car in Brisbane. I live in Melbourne. The car came with local RWC so was transferred into my name using my sister in laws QLD address and the usual required ID.
Had the car transported down to me. Changed the rego over at vicroads just before it expired. This required nothing more than a visit to hand in the old plates, pay rego and receive new plates. No inspection.
Very very painless.

So did you make a false declaration and state on the transfer forms that you were currently residing in QLD at your sister in laws address?

Mrs bought a car in qld from a dealer, dealer transferred rego into her name(wa address and all), car was transported to wa, drove it around in wa until rego was due, went in handed over qld plates and transferred to wa rego no inspection.

This was 2 years ago, i think there is some sort of loophole where you can put the car into your name on qld rego, but not do it in other states.

It looks like the QLD registration transfer only requires a QLD address where the vehicle is to be garaged, the owner does not need to live at that address.

You only have to own the car for 12mths and then its just a interstate plate swap for putting it into your name here in WA, no inspection you get a refund on old plates and pay for WA rego. Done it many many many times. Where you live or if you travel for work or have a mate in every city has nothing to do with them. The only reason they want to know where a car is if it gets a fine or is involved in something illegal. No good making things harder for yourself unless you just like making life complicated.

I doubt many members here are planning on buying an interstate car to rob a bank or even buying a Torana for other criminal activity. Some people are just wound way too tight by over analysing every single sentence rather than using plain common sense. If you have criminal intent in buying an interstate car or want to hoon up the streets like a race track in an unsafe dangerous car then that's a whole different conversation.

It depends on what mods. And what car. If it's LHD it has to be standard in SA, or close to. My friend got a beautiful rod from VIC and couldn't get it through Recency. Same with a friend looking at a Gran Torino. Happens all the time, people bring cars in, just to find they can't get it through unless they put it back to stock

There may be some things we're relaxed on, but others we're super strict

well have just dropped a deposit on a Torana fron nsw, will be picking it up on the 7th bringing it back to SA, first stop will be SAPOL for a tier 2 inspection where they check the engine & vin. numbers and give me an vehicle id certificate so i can then transfer it over to SA rego.

no mods cert. to worry about just hope the officer i get on the day doesnt decide to give me a hard time! will keep you posted as to how it goes...

Phew! So I'm not a criminal.
Andy you are obviously a knowledgeable detail oriented guy but I think you should get out and find how rules and regs are implemented every now and again. Rarely is the hard letter worst case scenario interpretation of the written stuff implemented as you often seem to imply. I like chewing the fat with the people who control the implementation of rules and regs in all facets of my life. I find most are reasonable people and many systems are far more flexible than I had anticipated.

I think it is preferable to know what the possible consequences are so you can weigh up the odds and make an informed decision.

well seems all my worries were unfounded, picked up my new torana from its previous owner in NSW he filled out the disposal notice, I drove it pretty much straight back to SA.

took it to the local police station for the ID check had all the information ready for the inspecting officer, popped the hood pointed out all the relevant numbers for him to verify, he made a few appreciative comments about the engine (355!) didn't even bother to look over the car! I was in and out in under 15mins!

got the ID check certificate took it to the rego office and 15mins later had new SA plates fitted to the car.

so for anyone who finds themselves in a similar position a few tips I can give you are; Be prepared, know your stuff ie; where all the vin/engine numbers are so as to not waste the inspecting officers time and finally cross your fingers and hope you get someone who appreciates these old cars!

Cheers Blair

Correct me if I am wrong but wasn't this topic all about transferring a modified car from one state to another state....
So the engineering laws apply
Yes transferring a standard car with no mods is just a simple inspection of motor & vin
But try and bring a modified car over the boarder and then it must meet all the new states engineering laws ...as I posted before
