One of my old engineering favourites the Giocattolo was recently brought up in a subject on this forum.

Because the car was rare (13 or so made) this reminded me of Todd Wilkes death which was caused by underdeveloped brakes and EC's lack of braking run off room.

I think Racewars needs to make sure that nobody has to look back in hindsight and that prevention is better than the 281kph Giocattolo situation.

Drag racer's death 'preceded by lack of safety precautions'
By Leonie Lamont
April 20, 2004

Motor racing in NSW should be taken out of the hands of motoring groups, with WorkCover overseeing the safety of events, a coroners inquest has been urged.

Yesterday's inquest, into the death of amateur car enthusiast Todd Wilkes, 29, at Eastern Creek Raceway in 2001, heard the meet was poorly organised, there was desultory scrutineering of the vehicles and safety and risk assessment was minimal.

Mr Wilkes died when his rare Giocattolo, an Alfa Romeo Sprint body housing a Holden twin turbocharged 5.7-litre V8 engine, crashed into a concrete barrier. After reaching 281kmh in an event called Terminal Velocity, he had 440 metres in which to brake. The inquest heard tests showed his rear brakes had faded and he hit the barrier at 140kmh.

Michael O'Brien, counsel assisting the coroner, said four organisers and scrutineers had previously been charged with manslaughter. He said a magistrate had discharged the four in 2002, but told the deputy state coroner, Carl Milovanovich, this did not stop further charges being laid.

Detective Senior Constable Wayne Francis, who led the investigation, said when he arrived at the crash site: "I found it difficult to understand why anyone would run a race that way there were no safety barriers or escape route."

The inquest heard the organisers had reversed the regular route taken by drag cars, with those in the Terminal Velocity event using the downhill slope for speed. Instead of finishing in a gravel and safety barrier area, the event ended with a concrete barrier.

A driver with high-pursuit training, Detective Francis said that when he drove the course at speed, he could not tell how long the straight was, and light distortion was making the track shimmer. The drivers were not given the opportunity to do test runs.

He said there were no records of what roles people were meant to be doing on the day, and no records of a track risk assessment. He said officials of the Confederation of Australian Motor Sports, which licenses motor racing in NSW, had conducted no safety checks that day.

"The training of safety persons, or others, was minimal," he said, calling for WorkCover to be involved to ensure the protection of competitors, spectators and officials many of whom are volunteers.

The costs and profits of the meet were shared by race promoter Cabin Auto Salon and the Australian Racing Drivers Club, which leases Eastern Creek. It was approved by CAMS.

The inquest continues.

Great to see the 306kph come up as it might have meant another year of being under 300kph (292kph)

Its not bad for any car to do this from a 1km standing start and under 18sec.

Now can we get a rwd Torana to crack 300kph?

No times for SONIC as they only timed the 1000m. I didn't see it but apparently he had traction issues big time on the 400m and the 800m even with those boots

Had a good weeked, sunstroke, 4hrs sleep in 3days, yellow decal, snapped crank, rally cross through a farmers fence.... had a blast !

This year i managed 5th outright, fastest E/T 19.4, 2nd fastest AWD, fastest 4cyl against 1400hp GTR, 1000+hp drag car supras etc..... but lunched a motor, snapped crank on 685hpatw Methanol tune.

Ran 281 Kmph touching limiter in 2 gears and missing 5th gear big time, could have gone 290+ i think with a clean run ! Needs a dog sequential box to do that easy !

http://youtu.be/EOl9a95AWMw

frOcking Midland TEG pigs were stopping cars with racewars stickers on the way into whylie and handing out stickers for any reason... 2 homo looking cowboys!

Winning run, well done Ant and Steve ;
