Hey im replacing my extractors on the LX and just wondering what is teh easiest way to get them out? They are all unbolted but I cant wriggle them through the gap. I've been told I need to undo the engine mount and lift the engine up a bit , which is what I originally thought I would have to do. Just wondering if there is any easier way?

Cheers

i think it depends on extractor design
some extractors basicly come out with no effort others you nearly need to rip the motor out.
but if you've unbolted them and tryed removing them with no success then it's proberbly time to unbolt the engine mounts :<_<:

its a damed nightmare :P

i recon hoisting up the engine would be the only way. its a mega tight squeeze.

for the dizzy, all u need is a short 9/16 ring spanner and come in from the heater box side. i sat on the engine to do it. hehe

dizzy is at rear to make motor shorter.
tip; gut an old open ended spanner and put a 70 deg bend in it.

9 inch grinder will get them pesky extractors out. Problem with that is they're not much good if you want to use them again.

You can buy a tool that is good for work on the dizzies. Comes in 3 pieces and you can plug a rachet drive into for better use I've found.

From memory I used a 9/16" angled ring ratchet for the dizzy bolt.

If you think that is a hard bolt to access talk to anyone with a 5 litre EFI engine with the stock Holden inlet manifold. A simple job like changing the plug leads... I was swearing and cursing for hours! :furious:

Helps with a hoist or pit, although you may be able to do the operation from above as well. Left hand side is not a problem. With the right hand side (drivers side) move the extractors till the mounting plates are dead vertical (they are horizontal when bolted to the engine, then lower them straight down (they might also go straight up, but I've never done it that way). Make sure the mounting plate (where it bolts to the heads) is behind (towards the cabin) the flexible steering coupling, otherwise it cuts it to bits.

It took me a good 2 hours of fiddling and a nylothane flexible steering link to work it out.

^^^ Forgot, in the two hours of fiddling, I think it also consumed one bag of good quality swear words. Hopefully with that advice you won't need a full bag.

Torries are full of smart thinking. Unfortunately what the advertising hype forgets to mention that most of that thinking is "outside the square".

farken worst job in the world to do.. had to undo the engine mounts and jack the car up, undo the sway bar, undo the starter motor, then bguck around until I find out i have to take the RHS extractor out to file some of the weld away so the bolt would go in. my god I hope I never have to do that all again lol..

Sounds tough as though coming straight out the extractors. Im gonna record it on the laptop tomorrow :D
