Dave, I suspect he means the greyish white plastic coated material that glues onto the inner door frame, like a waterproofing membrane to prevent water from getting on the back of the door trims and/or dripping onto the sill scuff plates or entering the passenger cabin.

Hi
I seem to recall that the original method used was lacquered calico. I would just go for some plastic sheet cut to size and held down with non hardening adhesive as used on modern cars.
Cheers

Go to a trimmer and get some vinyl ,shiny side in ,cotton side out and a bead of silastic around it .Keep in mind you could be regularly wanting to gain access into the doors for regular fish oiling ,rustproofing etc .Vinyl may be a bit more durable.

Hanra ,yes windscreen sealer would be better.

I chased up the 3M strip caulk but could only buy it from the States. It is good gear though. There would be something similar in Australia

Fish oil is pretty rubbish, swapping to a good cavity wax like tectyl 506 will all but eliminate this.

Any mastic, I use Bostic non hardening mastic, if you want something a bit stickyer Selly's Butyl Mastic is good.
Cheers.

I use a product called Lanotech ,used cavity wax also ,both good.

Sheep oil (Lanotech) has the same problem as fish oil, it stinks and it washes out. Lano is better than fish oil for the washing out part though, lasts a lot longer, and if your a kiwi i suppose the smell would be the goods.
Cheers.

Cant win ,I used fish oil and the car was surrounded by cats, then I used Lanotech and the car was surrounded by Kiwis! Don't even want to think about Cavity Wax.

Before I put the door hardware and windows back in, I took the opportunity to cut out some cardboard (a bit bigger than each hole) then held them in and traced the opening. Then I got some very very heavy mattress protection plastic from a bedding shop and cut them nice and neat. Then attached them using a non hardening glue (almost like windscreen sealer). Its the stuff that Toyota uses for the same job (can't remember the part number or name but your Toyota service manager knows the gunk)
I have also seen many people use Bostik Blu-tack Mastic Adhesive

Yes I read about some guy who swore by Cavity Wax used it quite often. He was in Alcatraz "Cell No55" his name was Big Bubba, apparently he had been locked inside for 20yrs but was very friendly with all the new young boys. ..... LOL
