Spider Gears are needed, and a Gear change while there,

so we either have spare parts, or a Goodie Exchange job.

Now that is the other option, a Fully Reconditioned Centre

How is going to a 3.55 or 3.7 going to widen the gap between 1st and 2nd though ? As has been mentioned you need a taller diff or even a different box for that.

Its not.

When i was driving my mates LH around with a supercharged 304, t5 and 3.9's the best way to drive it calmly was go 1-3-5.

Totally skip 2 and 4.

Then when you were under it go through all the gears.

Short of changing the box your not going to fix that issue.

I agree DJ,

how do we have the best of both worlds,

have a 5 or 6 speed box and have spaces between gears.

a compromise or less gears or a taller diff?

Edit:-

When you have the Power in the Motor,

to me, a 3 speed gives the gear spacing, and the 2.78:1 diff gives the overdrive.

Not sure of the condition of the Cones or housing spider gear shaft supports yet,

we will have to wait a bit there,

I want to change out rear ends last weekend, and now this weekend,

but it is a bit of a job, as you can Imagine I got to get to work on Monday.

Might have to bite the bullet.

is your one an LSD Tony?

Yes mine is a lsd Dave. I was leaning more towards the 2.78 but the thing that gets me is the 14 gts wheels I have. What a reco centre worth these days
Cheers

You need to verify which 10 bolt diff you have. You mention that it is a "cut down hk Bathurst 10 bolt diff with 3.08 gears" which I believe are Chev 10 bolt diffs, not the Large Salisbury Holden 10 bolt that was fitted to the V8's & 1 tonner etc. range. As far as I'm aware none of the parts are interchangeable.

That correct warrenm there are two types off 10 bolts mine is out off a hk Bathurst monaro which is the Chevy type and the parts are not interchangeable here's a pic off my backing plate You can even see the chip where the spider gear hit the backing plate and chipped the paint.

That's the original cover I had and I thought it looked s##t. On eBay the more wording you but in the title the more words you can but in your browser. So you can type in hk or hg or ht or 10 bolt or Bathurst in your search engine and this diff will come up. I have already seen this diff but my diff was not worth that much when I decided to cut it up lol.

You could give Chris' differentials a call. If he cant help you he might know someone who can.

To answer the original question I would use something in the range 3.25 - 3.7 depending what's available. Stay away from the 2.78 and similar unless you like being beaten away from the lights by all and sundry.

I realize this is V8 Stuff,

but, for example, a M22 from a 1 Tonner Red Six has a 1st Gear Ratio of 3.74:1, which when coupled with a 2.78:1 Ratio Diff equates,

to a M20 1st gear and a Diff ratio of about 3.4:1. ( and that is the 1st gear take off )

I just had to drop that Idea in.

Don't forget that I'm running 14" wheels and I won't go to 15" coz I'm not changing the look. I would rather cuz with 3.08's
The problem is now finding a Chevy 10 bolt. I'll try chis differential tomorrow and see what happens
Cheers
