K Frame outrigger bushes

Hi Guys. As pictured is how I thought the bushes should go in a LJ.

Speaking with other people and they suggest the same. Measure the car and that looks correct for best fit.

 

BUT

 

Look in the book and it shows this?

Marty, the diagram in the parts book is correct for fitment of the LC/LJ rear brace bush.

Hi Dave, 

On what grounds is the book correct?  It has been wrong before.

 

It doesn't make sense having metal to metal contact at that point.  I even found my picture before restoration and it shows the bush the other way.

That's interesting reading Dave, also shows a lot of conjecture regarding these bushes. There must be guys here who race these cars, put them under extreme pressure and have tried both ways. My guess is, it makes no difference. Thanks, Marty.

Whichever way you fit them is entirely up to you Marty. Just trying to point you in the right direction for correct fitment per GMH advice.

 

You know how lots of these Torana's suffer stress cracks in the braces where they attach to the crossmember? I can only say my original crossmember suffered those same cracks and had the bushes installed with the large head against the rail.

 

The NOS crossmember I fitted back in the late 80's with the brace bushes installed the correct way as per the GMH Dealer Service Letter is so far free of any cracks.

Just doing mine now.  Mine were as you have shown Marty.  I'm not saying it's right. But it makes mare sense to me to be that way.  My bolt came from outside, with the nut on the inside.  The outside of the bolt hole has an unremovable steel washer. the inside of the K frame where the bolt ends has a steel washer to protect the rubber bush.  Not saying it can't go both ways. But generally if a washer is fixed to a section, that is where the head of the bolts would sit. And the threaded end would be fitted with washers and nut.  my way of thinking anyway.. ?

Hi guys,

Old thread i know, but most relevant.

The bolt that goes through the k-frame out rigger bush and chassis rail. What length and thread is it meant to be.

My car has 4-inch long 7/16 unf bolts fitted with conelock nuts.(not quite long enough that a full nut screws entirely onto the bolt with a smidge of thread to show after tightened.

The LJ parts catalogue lists (marked it purple) a 4-1/2 inch unc bolt, closest thing to fit that area.
