Thank you all for ideas and references to oil adds and the like.

I will try 10-40 for the winter and switch to 15-40 in summer

I did try a while back some heavy 30-60  oils when I trying to find an oil consumption issue,( which turned out to be incorrectly installed valve stem seals, problem all solved now for over 1000K)

, however the lifter noise drove me crazy in the morning

the reason behind dropping to a 10-40. The temps here range from -2 to + 1 at the moment every morning, and whilst 15-40 will fit this range I will try the lighter oil, if oil consumption increases from zip to something I will change back, same  as I will need to check as we go thru summer . at the moment I'm using it as an every day driver, its yet to head to the paint shop  its booked in but I have to wait.

I am not sure, but the Sunbird four cylinder starfire owners manual gives a chart of viscosity verses ambient air temp. as a guide.

It has already been pointed out that SAE numbers may vary from time of printing,a lot of oil has passed through the engine since then.

Are there any hard driven Sunbirds still running their original 4-banger mills?

GTX was 20-50 back in the 'oils aint' days AFAIK, but for hard run 4T shit - we'd put GP-50 in 'em for summer caning duties..

Ran Castrol oil in the day when we where racing, love Castrol oil

But GP50 killed more engines than it saved, do they make it anymore??

Castrol 2-stroke stuff inc' gearbox oil is OK, but I haven't used their 4T oil for ~25 years..

I liked Pennzoil, but stopped using it when they were taken over by the same mob as took over Castrol..

I've had several complaints about one person in this thread. It's turned into a tit for tat shitfight. JAW all your "contributions" are begining to become borderline. First warning.

Actually Red its his second warning - I've already given one for the same behavior in the carb thread

J.A.W.

I will say this one last time

Pull your head in

You will get no more warning... you will be deleted

2 warnings in 10 days and 240+ posts (alot crap) doesn't go well for you

If you wish to contribute and hang around fine

But pull your head out of your ass or I'll chop it off at your neck
