Hi all,
I think this has been discussed before or a simliar topic has been.
Have read lots of threads,
I have some questions about achieving this goal.
The plan is to compare the cost of both ideas below,
the most cost effective will probably be the winner in the end.

1. Converting 253-308 Red heads to unleaded fuel
Required modifications to achieve this?

2. Putting VN or similar ULP heads on a Red V8, and running 4 barrel carb.
Required modifications to Motor, Exhaust, Intake?

Thanks
Chris.

Simple answer is it's a fair bit cheaper to have your old style heads reconed to run on ULP.
If cost is not a worry than go with the VN onwards style heads.

imo that you should find VL Commodore carbie heads as they were suited to the unleaded fuel from factory also would be cheaper than VN style heads as you do not need to change cam hope this helps

Hey,
Wow there is a 3rd option,
Did not think of VL 308 heads.
ULP and carby driven,
Do you know if the intake manifold is the same as a red 308 rochester manifold?

Any idea of how much for
a ULP head conversion?
VL Commodore Heads?

Cheers
Chris.

Last set i purchased from a swap meet cost me $250 including the inlet manifold
to ans your other q red manifold wont bolt up in the centrebolt holes and the egr ports are square in VL as opposed to red being horseshoe shaped. If your not looking for a real performance gain a blue-black manifold can be found on Evil bay for less than $50 dollars
hope this helps cheers Jay

you can buy from a shell servo what they call valve master, its in a tube and you add the liquid to a tank of unleaded fuel. ive used it for a while now with no problem.

Recoing your heads with new valve guides that dont need the lead from the fuel for lubrication is a good move. This is the reason old heads need the fuel additives.

Valve seat recession may also be a problem and can be fixed by inserting hardened valve seats, but this is expensive and some people will say that its not necessary.

i have a prozone fuel converter in Ruby, I think 2 years now. simple to install just connects to fuel line btween carby and fuel pump. Cost me $100 bucks.

that is it on the side of the rocker cover, simply cut fuel lines to suit and install. U need to cover the cylinder with insulating tube foam as i have done. There r different ones for different size engines, Ruby currently has a 6cyl. I am gunna get the valve seats checked when I remove motor in the next few (?????) months.

Hi all,
thanks for your replies,
I should have stated, the reason for finding all this out,
The 253 in the LX hatch is going to get a rebuild when the manual conversion gove in.
So I though I would find out the possibilities for the heads while they are off the motor.
Have been running PULP in it and upper cylinder lube,
will find out how well that went, when the heads come off.
But would like to have options if that is causing valve or seat damage.
Cheers
Chris.
