I've stated this before a few times and it's getting a bit old so sorry for the repetition guys :P

I've got a new BT50 and have been towing cars and boats with it for thousands of km's since getting it and can't praise enough how it tows.

Admittedly, the heaviest car I've towed is a Falcon, so probably 2200kg total weight with my trailer, and you barely tell it's there.  Even up long hills it just powers along.  No swaying, no fearful moments under braking, awesome economy, heaps of features, very comfortable....

For my needs, hauling parts, cars and boats around, the BT50/Ranger is a top vehicle.

To Colin (lakeside), just get whatever'll keep the boss happy mate :)

Yeah I have a 100 series non turbo diesel and it tows like a champ.

If you get a TD or V8 they tow even better.

My next door neighbour has a TD 6cyl 100 series with A750F auto. It is a great tow car.

Towing capacity on the new Kluger is abit soft at 700kg unbraked and 2000kg braked

Doubt it would be suitable for this application no matter which wheels it was driving from

I wouldn't touch a 2nd hand diesel with a 10 foot pole. I'd be looking at this sort of thing, offering $38k:

http://www.carsales....4/?Cr=5&sdmvc=1

You can buy cheaper though:

This you'd probably get for $28k: http://www.carsales..../?Cr=23&sdmvc=1

This for under $20k I reckon: http://www.carsales..../?Cr=33&sdmvc=1

I was looking at getting one and getting it chopped into a ute, as both Toyota and Nissan refuse to put a petrol engine in their utes, let alone a decent one.

Why not Yel?

Just curious as to why you hate diesels so much?

IM going to guess overpriced, not that much cheaper to run, and either totally gutless or very very expensive to fix when something goes wrong ($800 or so an injector for a common rail....)

Cheers.

Mmm.,..he did say something like that earlier, I was wondering if there was more to it.

Both my daily's are diesel and my Hilux has cost me a bit at times, but its 20 years old, and the motor's last pretty much forever if you look after them.

Mine aren't common rail though, so I guess you can't really compare them with a modern Diesel engine.

WIth common rail comes petrol like performance but there are trade-offs, I don't think those motors will last as long as the old style diesels.

I think you both summed it up!

I don't hate diesels, they have their place, I just don't get their popularity especially on a forum like this. I mean if any of us had the opportunity to go back to the 70's and buy a HQ coupe or an LX hatchback (forgetting the value today) would we:

1. Buy a 350 TH400 HQ coupe OR buy a 308 LX hatchback? or

2. Buy a 173 trimatic HQ coupe OR buy a Sunbird (or a 6cyl SL/R for that matter). AND pay more for the damn thing because it uses less fuel? And costs the earth to fix if something went wrong with it.

I should also re-state that for Bomber's sake, and using auto Hiluxes as the comparison:

Choice of:

A 202 M20 UC Torana hatchback OR

A Starfire MC6 Sunbird hatchback.

Sunbird costs more to buy and more to service, and if engine has a problem it costs a bomb to fix. Secondhand the price differential is huge.

Other qualifications:

You know 99% of engine problems with these cars are with the 4cyl.

4cyl gearbox is known to be p!ssweak

4cyl engine is made in Thailand, 202 is Aussie made. Same with boxes. (D4D Hilux and 4spd auto is Thai, V6 and 5spd auto is Japanese).

THanks for that clarification mate, your first one didnt make much sense :P

New D4D's have the jap 5 speed to, incase you didnt know.

Still like my V6 petty though!!!

Judge, I dont mind old school diesles, pre common rail, but they irritate me during the daily commute.

Your right one of them wouldnt cost much more to fix than the average petty with a problem.

New Common rails are prone to injector failure, Pretty sure Toyota is around $800 an injector, and each injector has a chip that is coded to the car, so you need to have them fitted by a dealer so they can reflash the computer to suilt the new injectors. Also fuel rails are a single use item, etc etc etc.

A mate has a 06 3lt hilux which has a missfire, its definitely injectors, was quoted $4600 by Toyota to fix it.....Thats a frOcking lot of extra fuel that my 05 V6 chews before that money is payed off and they even up again.....Whats an injector clean and reflow for a EFI petty, like $25 an injector?

I did the sums when i was looking to upgrade from the '90 TD 80 series, and worked out with the average 8k more to buy a 3lt diesel Hilux over a 4lt V6 petty with my average yearly kilometers traveled and an average fuel consumption for both cars, plus the little bit extra rego here for a 6 compared to a 4, it would still take 8 years for the Diesel to actually start saving me money, PROVIDING nothing went wrong with it......

Cheers.

Yeah I do know they've fitted the A750F into the diesels now, but go drive one. Fricking awful! The throttle response is terrible.

I'll send you a copy of the dyno results when I get the exhaust and XEDE processor in. I got it done a few weeks ago as a "before" for a comparison.

Buying one new is the only way i'd do it, I just don't trust the stupidity factor of the average person when buying a used diesel. Diesel would still have been false economy for me given it is 10c/L dearer than E10, the diesel was $2000 dearer when I bought mine and I only do about 12,000kM p/a. I noticed in QLD last week diesel was 20-25c/L dearer than E10 making the petrol car actually cheaper to run full stop.

I get the economy thing if you are doing 30,000kM p/a. But I still can't swallow the gutless nature of them in an everyday driver.

Disagree mate, I've got the new 5spd auto D4D, worlds apart to the 4 spd. It does seem to predict throttle behaviour a bit which is annoying... DJ has been in mine at highway speed... ?

IMO, the V6 has terrible commodore like throttle response... Slightest touch and your spinning wheels ... That is terrible.
