I have just had a 2L diesel rebuilt for my old up until now faithful Hilux rat truck.
Got it back and before too long water was pissing out of the bottom of the timing belt cover. Rang the mechanic and he blamed my 2 year old water pump, saying it was because it had sat around for 3 and a half weeks while the motor was being done essentially washing his hands of it, and advised me to fit a new pump.
I had a feeling he hadn't fitted it properly. Anyway I've pulled it apart and it was leaking from one of the mounting bolts, so I sent him a pic, he rang me back and said he'd never had that problem before. It only occurred to me after I pulled it down that if the pump seal was leaking as he claimed it would be coming from the nose of the pump.
I have been searching online for advice on fitting a new pump (as I don't have a manual for it) to see if it specified that that bolt in particular required thread sealant and found this article -

No mention of thread sealant but one of the pics shows rust stains (like I have) on the same upper left bolt hole that is leaking on mine. He does say however that gasket sealant should be applied to both sides of the gasket, which wasn't done on mine.
Does anyone have experience with these motors and is the mechanic at fault here in your opinion ?
Thanks.
