I have just had a 2L diesel rebuilt for my old up until now faithful Hilux rat truck.

Got it back and before too long water was pissing out of the bottom of the timing belt cover. Rang the mechanic and he blamed my 2 year old water pump, saying it was because it had sat around for 3 and a half weeks while the motor was being done essentially washing his hands of it, and advised me to fit a new pump.

I had a feeling he hadn't fitted it properly. Anyway I've pulled it apart and it was leaking from one of the mounting bolts, so I sent him a pic, he rang me back and said he'd never had that problem before. It only occurred to me after I pulled it down that if the pump seal was leaking as he claimed it would be coming from the nose of the pump.

I have been searching online for advice on fitting a new pump (as I don't have a manual for it) to see if it specified that that bolt in particular required thread sealant and found this article -

No mention of thread sealant but one of the pics shows rust stains (like I have) on the same upper left bolt hole that is leaking on mine. He does say however that gasket sealant should be applied to both sides of the gasket, which wasn't done on mine.

Does anyone have experience with these motors and is the mechanic at fault here in your opinion ?

Thanks.

Never had any practice on them to be honest, sounds like one of the retaining bolts "might" go into water and should have a bit of

sealant on thread when fitted and it was not done on yours..same as gasket..or because of the age of pump and how long it sat :) that it is buggered?

Or ol mate just din't check..might be a "common fault"??

It was definitely leaking out of the bolt. I'm just wondering if he should have known that this bolt in particular needed thread sealant.

After paying an arm and a leg for the rebuild I'm a bit pissed off about having to finish the job properly myself. And as I said, when I rang him to complain he said it was the pump and that I should buy a new one. That is a joke.

I put the pump back in today. Silastic on all bolt threads and Loctite No. 3 on both sides of the gasket. Should be ready to fill with water tomorrow afternoon.

If someone rebuilds an engine and something leaks, hell yes its their fault. I think the mechanic should have at least suggested that the pump be replaced if he didn't know its history especially as these pumps tend to have the impeller blades corrode away to nothing. I would have done the radiator as well. When you refit the timing belt you'll notice the fuel distributor pulley is spring loaded. A socket wedged between the pulley teeth and a nearby solid piece will hold the pulley in the correct place to help reassembly. Sorry if you already knew that but it helped me the first time I did one of these engines.

I don't really have time these days to do major work on my cars anymore but I have to because I hate paying for shoddy work.

I agree that he should have fixed it.

What really pisses me off is that due to a phone conversation I had with him on the day I got it back I'm pretty sure he knew there was something wrong and instead of fixing it he put some kind of stop leak in and gave it to me like that. It is not an easy job as you know to get in there.

I then drove it 150klms that night (it was almost dark when I left his place) as I really needed to do some shopping. I did lift the bonnet with it running once in town to check if anything was loose etc but didn't notice the leak but it was dark and I didn't really look down there.

When I went to drive it a couple of days later it needed 750mls of water. Topped it up drove it another 40 klms, got out for a pee and noticed water p!ssing out. I could have easily wrecked the new motor the night I got it back.

I think the water pump was the (not very clever) story he made up to shift the blame.

He offered to pick me up a new pump but said he didn't think it was his responsibility to fit it.

When I said to him, "Wouldn't it leak from the nose of the pump if the pump was the problem ?" after I pulled it apart he said a bit sheepishly "Yeah, that's right' lol.

There is heaps more to the story but I just wanted to know if it is a well known fact that this bolt goes into the waterjacket.

Anyway, went into town and back today, no leaks, so that was good.
