Well if this thread has proven anything, it's not actually really a Holden vs Ford thing, it's just that some people are frOckwits.

Haha. Best post ever

I dont mind either i drive a ef falcon base model with an xr6 motor in it and its a good reliable family car. Yet the torana is my project.

Alsp have to say i would own any falcon over a commodore.

just read most of this thread....good to see some passionate views expressed.

I don't hate fords either...Ive had a XR Fal. 500 with 289 auto(and a brush paint job !...essentially just an old shitta, )..bought for $500., a 250 ci XLE TD Corty, and a new Escort RS2000 2 door.

- the 289 V8 was a nice old thing...handled like a plastic bag full of water

- the XLE was a nice old thing, but handled like a bag  o'shite, despite any number of tricky shocks and sway bars being bolted on.

- the RS2000 was tweaked by Bob Holden in Sydney, and Peter Mullins in Newcastle,  and went ok, but still never really handled very well

Thus , I don't hate em,  but I do hate how they just don't go around corners!!!

Several different decades there,,and still they didn't get it right.

One or 2 things that Ford was responsible for is the precursor to MSD ignition, back in 1923 they had a "coil pack" for each cylinder that was basically

a "elctromechanical" vibrator to produce msd, they also had if i am correct the precursor to the auto transmission although you needed to know what

pedal to release/push to get the next gear.

Why they went from the windsor to  clevo who will ever know.

Like any car makers they all have their pros and cons.

Take note next time that Shannons ad is on where the guy is boasting about his GTHO being "The fastest four door..."

a six cylinder Valiant Charger was faster down the quarter mile

Even still, it's good to own something that's 'the fastest' in its class.

I own one of each and am happy with both. Admittedly I didn't share a love for Fords until recently and mainly Aus. Fords; this'd be partly due to growing up here with Bathurst rivalry but the Aus. models aren't as sexy as their US counterparts.

Oddly enough on the Mustang forum there's plenty of guys there that used to or still own Toranas, I recall on a 'favourite car' thread a few nominated Toranas they'd owned; some were after a Torana but due to high Torana prices and drop in the USD decided to get a Mustang.

Do you know why they have to add the "four door" qualification? Because a six cylinder Valiant Charger was faster down the quarter mile!

I chuckle every time I hear it.

It was also the fastest 4 door car in the world at the time...Faster than Mercedes and BMW saloons etc, which were renowned for there performance.

Cheers.

Yep, they said the GTHO phase 3 could change into 4 gear at 125MPH .....   not to shabby in 1972 for a Taxi, with a letter box through the bonnet, and a bird perch on the boot ....   :3gears:

Yeah but stopping and turning, not so good!

I guess you could say that for most cars of the era though.

Good enough to win Bathurst though
1/4 mile times a wank anyway

Especially from the USA; it was all about quarter mile times for them.

The 1/4 mile time might have been good but i think the HO would have reeled em in a bit further down the track.

They could change into top at over 125 depending on rear axle ratio..scary shit back then considering the roads.

Not sure, but at the time weren't the Ho's considered Australias fastest 'production car',not whatever that brought on the

"supercar" scare? 140 on the Hume when wipers lifted off the window? :)

Thanks mate. Still doing a bit of work to it to get it to my lofty standards but in 6 months or so I should be happy with it.

There is debate about this, for some reason the HO was claimed to be fastest for many years but Chrysler fans all disagreed; something to do with the way it's worded.

Edit: The E49 Charger and the Phase3 GTHO Falcon were equal in performance, from 0-60mph "100kph" in 6.3 seconds and 14.4 in the standing 1/4 mile only the E49 was a tad bit quicker to 100mph "160kph" with a time of 14.1 seconds, the Falcon pulling 14.6. But the Phase3 GTHO was a lot faster after the 160kph or 100mph mark, and also had a lot more top end pushing almost 145mph "232kph" at redline and 155mph "248kph" when pushed to 7000rpm.

^ If this is even correct.

Its like anything, how do you judge the fastest car on the planet atm?

F1 car will blitz anything on a twisty track, they defy the laws of physics through corners. Top fueler is the fastest accelerating thing on the planet full stop TMK, again they defy the laws of physics for 400 meters. And a salt lake racer is the quickest outright thing on wheels.... Three vastly different disciplines.

Cheers.
