You can see the 2.4mm heats less if you move fast enough. The 1.6mm will heat more area as you have to go slow.
This was just a test on some scrap 0.6mm

The rule of 1 amp per 1 thou was used here.
or close to. 1mm steel should be welded at 40 amps.

The above was done at
1.6@20amps
2.4@35amps
Both 0.6mm steel.

also these welds are very crap as the steel was only quickly wire brushed on a old bench grinder..

you need your steel ultra clean for good welds. and someone who doesnt shake at all.

Should be TIG welding. not TUG. in the head line. stupid phone typo correction

was going down that track a while ago,i am no expert and was on a bit of a learning curve using the wrong gas but found that if you went in small circles while welding

it seems to smooth things out a bit with a bit less filler ? it certainly is a different way to weld :) the shakes don't show up when you turn them into circles :)

yes circles do help alot, also backwards and forwards laying your wire in on the backwards stroke.

then the laywire works well at higher speeds also. but doesnt look as good for me..

having somewhere to perch your hand can help a lot also with the shakes.

if you have thick enough metal fusion welds with no filler are great and less heat again,
