I have a bit of a perplexing conundrum I have been stewing over the last few weeks.

See i have this:

temporary_zpsoprwbf5l.jpg

Its a 1980 VC base speck bit of shit.

The good:

factory L20

Factory M20

Power steering

Aircon (works)

Mechanicaly very sound.

Engine is basic, 3.3 blue, 350 Holley, strakkies, Crain gold series roller rockers for absolutely no apparent reason, runs well, no blow by, no smoke. Needs a tune up and an oil change and thats it.

Car drives well, when i got it home I took it for a lap around the block after getting it off the trailer, brakes work fairly well but could use a flush/bleed, rides well, steers well, stops straight, accelerates straight. Gearbox feels a tiny bit mushy (selector pin thing worn in the shifter, but not much) but apart from that shifts really well. Clutch is nearly new, yadda yadda.

It also came with a second one that has since been stripped and sent to a mate who races these things in speedway's place so he can strip some more goodies off it, from the other car i got:

Full SLE/SLX interior in VGC. Cool corduroy seats, high center console with the lid in it, etc.

All the other interior parts i need minus a decent carpet to put together a real nice clean up speck interior.
SLE/SLX chrome trim that goes around the windows
Various bibs and bobs
Full rear end cut.

The car has some rust issues, rear of the sils, rear quarters, rear guard lips, around the back windscreen, rear valence, PS front guard, bonnet.

I got a good cut off the other car to fix the rear sills and valance, the rest will need fabbing/buying stuff.

Basically I can put it on the road with about 100 hours or so work, pay a mate to do the rust repairs as although im capable of doing them I really dislike doing it so frOck it, new bonnet and ps front guard, front bumper to frOck the ugly bullbar off, all easy to get respray, swap interiors, buy a new knox carpet (cheap enough), fit all the flashy chrome trim, good old fashioned full service, then put it on club rego and take it on club runs.

Eventually yank the engine, put a baby cam in it, respray it and the engine bay, tidy some stuff up and wala, neat tidy club run hack.

Reason I like this idea is I havnt had a classic to take on club runs for years now, and since selling the Harley i've had to take the Hilux to all of them, which is annoying me. Even when the LJ is back on the road all bar the real local ones will be out, as its not really highway friendly. Having a nice stock car on club rego ($180 a year) to take on said runs, that has aircon and shit, would be kinda nice.

Other option is to yank the interior, give it a service, fit a mini spool, fit a fire extinguisher, and run it in local gravel motorkhana and khanacross events. If i fit a CAMS cage I could also run it in ralley sprints.

Plus sides of this option is lot less work, bit less money, race car.

Down sides are we only hold 2-3 events a year as outlined above, the Bitumen events i run the Mini in are far more frequent, the car is kinda large, so having it taking up room for a couple of race meets a year is a bit of a downer. Fitting a cage = time as well, though not needed at first.

Car owes me nothing, literally it was free, and either way i go the car will be worth more than it owes me, So im not really worried about that part. Either way the car will not impeed on LJ or Mini development as I dont really give a shit about it. I've wanted one of these for a while, and i think there going to be the next ones to steadily increase in value, so im not overly interested in selling it as is for current market value (what, $500?)....

So what would you do?

Poll away hehe.

Cheers.

Why are your only options to use it very infrequently?

Because full rego would be around $850 a year, and I already have a nice 05 V6 auto hilux that i daily, Sadly I need to tow the car trailer around, the Hilux can do this, the Commy cant...And I dont want $1700 a year for two fully registered cars, hence the only options are to use it very infrequently.

Cheers.

Im a Committee member for the later and am working my way up the ranks as an official for the former....

Honestly TBM im really failing to see the relevance of your posts.

76lxhatch, think you missed the point, racing will cost a lot less, but I see your point of view...

Cheers.

Mate I've read this three times over...

You said "I've wanted one of these for a while", so with this in mind what exactly did you picture the car doing when you got it? - not the sitting around for years in the one spot either...

But anywayz, I'd strip it & flog a heap of those cool bits off you got in favour of some affordable suspension components to rally it. It'll be cheap as being a commo, and you already have a tarmac car, who cares how many times it gets used!

I may have been slightly intoxicated when i started this thread, and might be very intoxicated now......

I have wanted one for a while, as something to cruise on club rego and sell in the future for a profit....

Realistically the race idea is a bit of a copout, But at the same time........

I dunno, thats why im asking you guys. Your advice is taken on board.

Pull the other one.

Maybe in initial setup but if you find any interest in it at all there are going to be "improvements" at the very least

Fix it up and cruise hands down. Early Commodores are sick cars for the street. Absolutely love driving my daily hack VK!

This is my mate's bros 202 VH that we've just recently put a cam in and converted to manual. Its got the corduroy trim and is just beautiful to putt around in.

Cruise it.

I think you are on the money with your assesment of values increasing, a tidy car is going to appreciate in the future and your initial outlay is pretty small consodering youre only paying for the rust work.

Tidy it up, slap some club rego on it and enjoy :)

Youll have the torana for drags, silly street antics and that stuff, the mini for racing and this for cruising.

Turn it into a race car.
Now, if you do decide to do that, you really won't need that nice console you mentioned....
