I`ve weighed up my options for rims and i dont fancy paying 1100each for the Intros that i wanted.
I`ve decided on the trusty convo pros. I`m fairly sure the diff is standard length and i`ll be running commodore pattern. I`ve been told a guy here recently put some on a 4 door and the biggest he could fit were 15x6 on the front and 15x7 on the rear with a 3 and 3/8 backspace. Does anyone know for sure?

Don't really know about the backspacing, but 7" being the widest doesn't sound right at all. Is that the limit of Convo Pro's availible backspaces or something? Sounds weird

Somebody who's dealt with convos should be able to confirm that because they've probably gone through the same process.

They come in 2 backspace sizes 3 and 3/8 or 4 inch. Next size up rims is an 8 1/2 inch which i would prefer. My sedan currently has 18x7.5`s on it and has heaps of room between the rim and the unrolled guard lip

This question is answered in this month's Street Machine in KB's workshop... i left my copy at work otherwise i'd type it in here. I do seem to recall a 265 tyre is about the widest you can fit under the rear, 245 at the front, without flares on (i think) an 8" rim.

I'll try and confirm tomorrow, unless someone else has a copy handy?

Cheers

Gav
Go see Stan at Allstreet wheels and Tyres and he'll measure them up for you
I spoke to him recently about my hatch and he said he can get 17x 9.5" under the back of my unflared hatch with minor mods he was going to show me

Copy of email
As for fitment if you don't already know, I offer a measure service to avoid any problems, suspension, brake & body tyre/wheel guard clearances or modivications. This costs $110.00 insotre or $150.00 onsite (Perth Metro) Full responsibility is on us. Please call to book an appointment for this. As for sizes of wheel I can make 17x9.5 fit under your rear guards with slight modifications that I can advise you with. Much more to discuss with you so please call me Tues, Wed & Thurs between 12.00 to 6.00pm

Minor mods, haha. yeah big hammer does the trick.

Personally I found optimal sizing on unflared car to be 7" on front, without lipping the guads and 9" rims on the rear, with lips rolled. I wouldnt go larger then 9" rims on rear unless you get the sledge hammer out.

Front tyres run a 205-225 and rear you can safely run 255-265, just get custom offset rims made, if you buy off the shelf commodore rims you'll be loosing valuable space.

Whether the rims fit or not will depend on the rolling diameter of the tyre and the offset. As a yardstick I know that for 15 you can fit 15 x 7 front and back with a +25 mm offset and 195/55/15 and 225/50/15 respectively. You could substitute the 195 for a 205 but risk some rubbing. The + 25 mm would equate to a 4.5 back space on the 7 rim. You could get some wider rims under the back or lessen the offset. The 3 3/8 offset on the 6 rim would leave 2 5/8 on the outside compared to the 2 4/8 in the example I gave. As for the backs they would be 3 5/8 on the outside compare to 2 4/8 in the example I gave. Keep in mind that the track for the front of these cars is 1 wider than the back from factory. I would personally go the 4 backspace on the 6 inch rim to give more clearance and make the distance under the wheel arches look more balanced. The offsets given sound OK to me for the convo pros for a flairless hatch, but get as much advice as possible before purchasing.

I have 15x 9 on the rear of my hatch But have had diff work shortened 1" either side But still with the right offset of the rims u can get 7.5 easy and 8 as a possibility, But ive managed to squeeze 265's under the rears But only 155's on teh front with a 4" rim due to the HQ conversion and the offset of the rim as the convo's have the little ridges I wanted them But the ones without ridges are made specificly to fit torana

Hope this helps :spoton:

What rims you chasing Gav?

If you spoke to Ben today ignore what he said... There are other options when it comes to Convo's ;)

PM me or MSN. Or simply drop by.

as green mentioned i also have 15x8.5 in rim with 3 3/8 bs on the back of my unflared hatch. Tyers are 255/60/15, but i had to get my diff shortened just over 2in each side and the rear tubs modified.

You wont be able to run a deep dish rims unless you chop your diff a little. Not sure but you might be able to run a shollow dish 8.5in rim?

As Toranavista pointed out tyre profile will need to be considered for clearence issues.

I have Simmons V5 8.5" x 15 on the back of my unflaired SLR5000. I dont think you need to go as wide as that IMHO.

Its not about the size of the width, its about how you use it!! Ha ha!!

I'm running 16 by 7's on my torry and i'm happy with the 225/50 tyres on there... I dont think you need to go much bigger than that imho...

Cheers

With a motor with a bit of torque and hp, just a 7 inch rim could make traction an issue if you want to lean on the loud pedal from time to time. 8 inches does'nt sound much, but does make a big difference and makes for a more desirable and practical option.
Personally I've got 17x7.5 that fit on the back of my unflared hatch. But I'm thinking of ditching these rims for some better looking and wider ones, hopefully with some minor mods to the rear wheel well's, I'll squeeze some 17x9's in there, should'nt be a big deal, and with over 400hp on tap, I'll need all the rubber I can muster!!

I`ve got 18x7.5 inch on my 4 door atm and they did nothing to aid in traction in the dry. Could quite easily spin them at anything under 80km/h. I also want an 8.5 inch rim to mount my 8 inch slicks to for the drags

im replacing my 16 x 7's +6 offset on the rear with 17x8's +38? offset. tyre goes from 225 to a 245.

at my extra low height with that offset, and the (rolled) guard lip was sitting on the tyre.

this change sets tyre in from guard another 10 mm

What are you going to be running on the front brett? 38 will foul on the upper control arm wont it? what has your front brake setup pushed your track out too?

I run +43mm offset on the front of mine, 17x7" rims but I do have hoppers kit (10mm track increase) The 17's clear over the balljoint with miles to spare.

well, i got my rims yesterday, tyres on today, only to find they supplied me with 2 different offsets... poofters.
i have one at +32mm (good) and one at about +41 (bad). the inside rear edge of the tyre on that rim rubs on the lip next to the chassis rail.
not too happy!

...oh, and they're only 235's
