So the issue is ive just blown out the seal on my oil filter for the second time, both times has happened on cold startups
Currently running standard oil pump and z160 filter
Penrite hpr40 25w-70
Engine was rebuilt just over 1000 kms ago, what would be possible cause and solution?
Im no mechanic so any help is greatly appreciated
Thanks in advance Blair

Oil filter tight?
What brand filter?
What is your cold oil pressure?

Cold pressure is around 60 psi
It has blown about an inch of the seal out of the filter both times

Sounds like the filter bypass has been plugged. Open it up again if it has but either way get rid of that ridiculous Penrite oil and use something more reasonable.

Sounds like something is restricted. Are you fitting the correct filter?

Okay will change oils, excuse my lack of knowledge but is the bypass the big nut on the bottom of the pump?
It's a spring loaded valve built into the filter mount. A more appropriate oil will more than likely solve the problem.
I don't like Penrite, I don't like their stupid mis-labeled oils, I don't like their stupid +10 bullshit and I don't like their bone-headed tech data. I'm all for buying Australian but not when the company is severely retarded and spreads misinformation. frOck Penrite. Use an oil that flows like oil, not like a glacier...

What is the hot oil pressure on idle and at about 3000 rpm .

Here's something to think about - would you put diff oil in your engine?
HPR40 has a viscosity at 40 deg of 272cSt (ideally it shouldn't be much over 100)
This is about twice as thick as 80w-90 gear oil and almost as thick as 85w-140 diff oil.
Penrite does have one advantage though - if you accidentally knock over the drum you have plenty of time to stand it back up before it spills...

So i dont do any more harm than good when i pull it apart, if it is blocked off what should i be looking for?
I may just switch oils and monitor it for now

What would you reccomend?

I usually use Caltex Delo 400 15w40 (the plain stuff, not the LE) but any of the hundreds of 15w40s with a bit of zinc will be fine.

I have a std pump with the bypass blocked and use Penrite HPR30(20w60) without any issues HPR40 is a little too thick for my liking they also do a 15w60 which means its a little thinner on cold start up (first number) but still keeps running temp viscosity(second number)
Thats good to know, i was running hpr30 prior to the rebuild and never had this problem, I do remember thinking that hpr40 seemed a little on the thick side but never thought to question it at the time.
All part of the learning process i guess, hopefully some thinner oil will resolve the issue.

Penrites first number and second number represent something different to that of the rest of the world. Even HPR30 is absurdly thick.

At idle when hot will drop to around 20. Cruising at highway speed 2700-3000 will sit around 60
Yep , change oil before you do anything else , to a 15/40 or 20/50 mineral oil .

If it blows in the same spot every time then inspect the pump face for defects.
Failing that, run thinner oil, cold pressure at idle is way too high OR don't rev your cold engine.

Is the Z160 the small V6 and later V8 filter? If no one as already said it, GET RID OF IT and run a Z30 or PF10 (if you can still buy them) and what nearly everyone else has said, put a sensible oil in it.

^ you can still buy a Z30/PF10 that were originally fitted to most of these engines
