304 holden, .030" over cast flat tops, stock crank & rods with ARP bolts & balanced.
ARP main studs
Block milled to zero deck.
VN heads, stock valves, good 5 angle valve job & mild bowl porting.
12.5:1 compression on E85
Crane 288 cam, crane rockers.
Harrop single plane intake match ported.
Quickfuel 750 E85 carb.
360rwhp @ 6800rpm (approx. 440-450hp at the fly), high 10 second passes in a well set up VK, low 11's in a car set up more for street use.
Done a bunch of these things, fairly cheap & make very good power/$.
Done a few with more headwork & more cam - 2.02" intake valves, 258/264 solid cam, 490-500hp & easy 10's in an early commo or torrie.
I hate the 286 crane, there are much better options.

Hey Tony.......To (hate) something is pretty strong words.......I understand by what you've written above that this cam (H286) isn't going to suit your needs as the main focus of your post was the need for speed with lots of Hp and very low quarter times......specialized fuel and carbie to match......that's fine and by what you've said the engines you build sound like real goers.......however i think you've missed the point of this thread in regards to what I want........I'm not after lightening speed on the quarter and I'm not even after max Hp out of the 304....all I want was a nice street usable car that has nice mid range Hp and is street usable to drive when ever I choose....also want to be able to run more standard pump fuel than E85......all in all I want it simple as my standard Torrie drive train isn't going to handle much more.
Nothing against what you said....if that's what you like I'm all for you doing it....I just don't want you hate something because it doesn't fit your idea of what should be.
Cheers
Al

I do hate the 286, it's a single pattern with wider lobe centres - so it won't rev past peak & is soggy through the midrange.
Stock stroke VN heads with a full exhaust you need some forward split & to get it kicking early with a strong midrange you need closer lobe centres.
Something like 228/232 on 107 centres dialled in on 105ICL will kill the 286 everywhere.
A solid would be better again - more everywhere, if you're starting from scratch & need to buy rockers anyway it's only a few extra bucks to run a solid, maintenance consists of checking the lash about once a year.
For a solid I'd go 234/238 on 107 - due to a solid having lash you need to go up a little in .050" duration.
I posted that combo to give an idea of what can be done with a basic 304 combo if you really want to lean on it but have a tight budget, built like that they are perfectly drivable but do require a 4000+ converter & short gears, not really suitable for highway use.
