With the high value being handed over for cars with apparent matching numbers and even bare blocks, thought it might be worthwhile starting a thread on how to spot a re stamped block.  Obviously the first port of  call is the cast date... but even that aligning is no guarantee...

Likely this will only apply to JP's, NP's, CK's etc... the higher value blocks....

I have accumulated at least 40 JP engine pics from various sale sites and even this site over the years.... so out of them, these are my pics for restamped numbers.

I have blanked out a couple of digits to save shit fights, please do the same if you have any obvious one's to post :)

Even the factory ones aren't perfect but they're definitely not as shit as some of the examples above.

At lest with V8's there is an excuse why the number has gone and the original has been restamped. There is no excuse for a 6cyl, 100% fraud rate! Personally I don't have an issue with putting your original number onto an engine, but only if you ever sell it you tell the truth. Trouble is too many scumbags out there, and too many gullible people to match.

Not sure about gullible.... When I purchased an Xu-1 in 07 I had no idea...

I wanted an XU-1, so I bought one.

Font size, pad depth or finish I had no clue... And likely some sellers who had them for ages ,cashing in had no idea either...

Scumbags are the only ones that frOck it up...

Gullible might be the wrong word for 2007, today though if you pay the sort of asking $ without doing homework it probably is the rigjt word. Especially if you listen to the charlatans that hang around them, but then maybe victim is a better fit!

From how I understand it those are broach marks that you see running side to side on the engine number pad from a linear broaching machine. The fakers will probably be using a mill or surface grinder hence why all the numbers in their photos are painted.
