Great work guys, I'm gonna go down the old skool 383 SBC road. There are definitely advantages of going down the LS road as far reliabilty, ease of making HP, light weight etc but I get the feeling it is by no means an easy conversion.

Have just attached a couple of pics   hehe

Once again thanks for all your input, will keep you posted after the SBC is in the engine bay.

My mate just finished a 383 SB in a LH Torana and it cost if not more than a LS conversion. A good carby and ignition for SB will cost more than a complete LS1 and auto or complete car.

And if I blow up the LS (touch wood!) replacements are had for next to nothing as they continue to fill the wrecking yards. Kinda like how cheap a replacement injected Holden became.

In an LJ coup, I don't think he needs any more power, it's got plenty as it is.
But my hatch on the other hand...........

Do you "have" to use extractors when fitting an LS* to an LH-LX-UC? Can the exhaust manifold that comes standard out of a commodore be used?

Still old school so can run carb

Or if you want to inject you just bolt it on

Yes you can. There are three or four different types, only one work. I have them on mine. To connect the rest of the pipe is a pain in the arse, but it can be done and they work well.
I will add that mine is LS2 not LS1, don't know if this is a factor or not.
