 G'day All

T'was going through some photos on my gmh-torana folder and revisited the one of my SS cap that Harry had signed at the Australian Muscle Car weekend in Sydney 2011

SS-Cap-by-H.jpg

Now I thought Harry was having a little joke at my expense for saying "schuby staffel" was German for "SS" and for me "SS" means Super Sports BUT I recently met up with the owner (again) of this odd looking 4 door LH who has German ancestry

Gong-trip-1.jpg

And on talking to him I mentioned Harry's humour and what he had written on my cap

Now he said that "Schutzstaffel" of which Harry had misspelled, an easy thing to do at his age, meant in German, "Storm Squadron"

Linking that with Harry's experiences during World War ll, now makes sense   :spoton:

 Hi Barry,

Would of thought 'SS' be 'Super Sedan',

but I am always wrong.  :furious:

Not sure if I have mentioned this here before, but I reckon I know how the Torana's SS logo came about...

IMG_1129_zpsd31bc5e8.jpg?1452891636797&1

Imagine some designer sitting about, drawing the logos - a few ideas but nothing seems quite 'right'.

Then he opens out a paper clip for no reason, just that it is there, and upon doing so he thinks: 'hang on a minute' - puts two side by side and voila - paper clips were the inspiration!

Just Google words like:

"history of Chevrolet Super Sport" and you'll find links showing the SS logo, which GMH obviously copied for HQ and dug up again for LX, Commodore and Ute.

Now I thought Harry was having a little joke at my expense for saying "schuby staffel"

It could be a personal joke Schuby is a municipality Germany but I don't think the last letter is a 'y' unless he wrote Shuly; it could be he didn't cross the 't' and the last letter is how he writes 'z'

Drop the y off Sporty and you have the US meaning of SS.

This is not the only time Harry had a lend of me  :wtf:

Sent down 3 glove-box lids for him to sign and put a piece of masking tape with "Harry Firth HDT 1969-77" right on where I would like him to sign it

Had a blank one and put that bit of tape up in the right hand corner so I could later get other signatures on it and this is how it came back

That's one that will not have any more signatures on it   :spoton:

Ya's are joking aye ?????   .............   SS means Super Sport ......  always has,  always will ...   GT= Grand Touring, GTS = Grand Touring Sports, GTR = Grand Touring Rally (I think, or maybe race.. who cares) :) ........  S = Sport, SL = Sport Luxury, SS = Super Sport ..........

According to my recollection anyway .....  But I could be wrong...........  lol, as if ....   :tease:

Barry

Founded in 1925, the “Schutzstaffel,” German for “Protective Echelon,” initially served as Nazi Party leader Adolf Hitler's (1889-1945) personal bodyguards, and later became one of the most powerful and feared organizations in all of Nazi Germany.
