There appears to be two oil pressure sender units listed for the LJ torana with gauges. One is 0-75psi and the other is 0-80psi. Which one is correct?. I'm assuming the 0-80psi sender is correct for the LJ since the LC oil pressure gauge indicates 0-80 on the dial.

0 - 80psi is correct for LJ GTR back in the day Holden part 7429181. Now I have a oil sender unit dated 7/1990 holden part 7429181 for LJ GTR and it has 500kpa (72.519 psi ) stamped on the side of it so Holden dropped the psi rating on them, hope info helps

Doesn't this mean that the oil gauge will never read correctly.

Your gauge will read short and If you have a old Holden oil pressure gauge how accurate is it after 44 years. Mate go for the 550 kpa oil send unit that = 79.771 psi That as close as you can get Today

Not really going to matter that much. I doubt there would be many, if any, old holden sixes that will make 80psi hot so if your oil pump can do 60psi hot the 500kpa (72psi) sender unit will still be fine.

Thats true but I at least want the gauge to read correctly, especially if the oil pressure is low. Can you tell me which thread it is?

I thought the thread size for the sender was 1/8" but I could be wrong, sorry I can't be more definite.

The VDO catalogue does not list an oil pressure sender for the LC / LJ.

The gauge should read correctly with either sender unit. The difference is one sender is capable of registering a higher pressure indication on the guage than the other. 72 psi vs 79 psi.

Phil, the oil pressure gauge without any numbers is the LJ metric gauge. Introduced into production from July 1973.

The matching LJ metric temp gauge is marked in Celsius and the speedometer is the dual scale KM/mph variety.

Not sure I agree with you Dave. Both sender units have a working range of 0-180 ohms. This would mean that when the sender is at half pressure (90 ohms), one would read 36psi and the other 40psi. It's not much I know, but if I'm going to buy one, I might as well buy the one which will read most accurate (that is if I can get one).

If both senders operate from 0 to 180 ohms then they both must display the same needle position on the gauge for the same ohms.

Are both of these senders from the same manufacturer?

Almost forgot. I found a thread On the Forum in which Dr Terry advises the thread size on the oil press sender is 1/4" NPT.

Thanks for the thread size Dave. From what I can make out the original sender used was an 80psi VDO unit. Looking at the VDO catalogue the closest sender now available in the correct thread size, resistance range (0-180 ohms) and button type connection is a 75psi unit. Probably close enough.

Dr Terry advocates the VDO sender Pt No. 360-004 is the correct replacement unit to suit the HB/LC/LJ/TA Torana, HD/HR, HK/T/G & HQ Holden with oil pressure gauge.
