I have just got 2 new rear tyres on the Hatch and driving home the rear left is starting to grind badly. I got it home and took the drum off to find that the rear shoe is grinding on the outside edge of the drum. The retaining pin is in place and so is the clip but it is still grinding. Any ideas?

The axle bearing may be worn or the retaining collar may have moved. Are the wheels the original ones before the new tyres?

Is the grinding mark in the drum all the way around or just in 1 spot?
Are you sure its the shoe hitting it and not the backing plate?

It is definetly the shoe as the shoe has a wear mark on it to. It is all around the drum but one side is worse than the other... Could is be a warped drum?

Wondering if when the new tyres where put on the rattled them up and it has warped the drum..or the flange of the axle may be not square ..or could the bearing have slipped on the axle.?

Hi Josh
Is the brake shoe sitting on the wheel cyclinder properly if not
this can cause these type of problems.

Yep its all sitting in there properly. I pulled it apart on Saturday and put the new retainers in. The new ones being quite different to the old ones. But i did replace both retainers with the new ones.

I also went out and bought a pair of new wheel cylinders for it but haven't put them in yet.

According to my Torana Manual the brakes don't look complete. Your Thoughts?

I can help pull an axle out of the sunbudgie or I can pull it out of my spare (easier)

It really is starting to sound like wheel bearing.
