Why is it called an eight bolt when I can see ten?

Is it eight bolts for the ring gear? And if so, does the ten bolt in the early Monaros have ten? Is there a twelve bolt? Does this only apply to Salisburys or are Borg Warners known by the same system? (Never even thought about this before)

Don't know why those terms are used for the Holden diffs these days, they always used to be just big and small Salisbury. Counting the crownwheel bolts applies to the Chev(/BOP) diffs, 10 bolt, 12 bolt. A 10 bolt Chev diff is nothing like a large Salisbury.

Yes, 12 bolt was also the amount of bolts on the ring gear, 10 bolt ect. But Australian 10 bolts had a 7.56 inch ring gear where Yank 10 bolts had a 8 inch ring gear, but horrible C clip axels.
