I do targa and know of about 4 other targa toranas, some are kind of next level.
Some have murry coote shocks some use supershock.
Springs comes def comes down to type/class, circuit generally run 1200pds, sometimes more in the front
Targa is between 1000-1100pds.
The front end does reapond from some small changes, power steering is a must, helps you respond faster when car steps out also less strenus when in it all day.
The factory rearend only lets you go so far, so know of 4 targa torans using some sort of varition of a 3 link, the difference is huge specially on the bumpy shit roads of targa, going 3 link also dramatically changes rear spring rate.
If dedicated race car and rules allow rose joints no bushes, want the suspension as free moving as possible.
The chasis's are weak years of racing abuse you will find cracks, few of the targa cars are on the heavier side for a torana as they have bracing.

There's guys on here who know heaps more than I do, and race more seriously as well.
Not sure if you are a new track guy or experienced.?
I only do Hillclimbs, Lap dashes, Supersprints, Regularity etc in a LJ, but can offer the following if you like -
- R spec type tyres make a big difference
- Hot road car type suspension just doesn't cut it on the track ( i.e. typical lowered coils and stiff shocks)
- Proper brake pads are a must
- I went with Kings springs and Spax adjustable shocks all round. These made an immediate big improvement, and from that a simple tweak cut another 2 secs a lap off.
Mine was supplied and set up by Suspension Concepts at Wyong. Those guys do heaps of High end race and Targa cars and club cars / fast roadies.

As ozyozyozy & RallyRed have pointed out, this is a very difficult question to answer without a lot more information. For example:
- what sort of racing do you want to do - circuit, tarmac rally, drag, etc?
- what category and/or class do you want to compete in - track days, club level motorsport, State, National ............?
- what tyres are you going to run - road, R Spec, slicks?
- does the car need to also be road legal?
- how much money do you want to spend?

Toranas are capable cars, with specific tweeks depending on class/discipline of racing they can be reasonably competitive.
Personnaly i find them alot of fun and more rewarding than other cars.
If your out to win tho and are determined to do that, they do require a step to the next level and thats were things can get crazy.
