Hi guys,

Took my car for a spin today, first time in 3 months it been on the road, and noticed the brakes are even worse than I remember. It takes excessive force on the pedal to get the thing to pull up, which can be really quite scary. I nearly rear-ended someone trying to pull it up from about 40 kph!

I was after a brake specialist who I can go to and have a talk with and do a bit of problem solving - looking at what I have, weak points, whats not up to scratch etc. I'm not after someone who's used to doing new pads on falcons but someone who will be familiar with the older cars, the sort of thing needed for low vacum motors etc.

Are there shops ppl can recomend for this type of thing? I'm in the nth/eastern suburbs so something around here would be handy but I will travel to a place with the goods and right rep.

Thanks,

Liam.

Did you just want your brakes looked at? or maybe a conversion? Do u just have standard Torana brakes?

Cos there is the Hoppers Crossing brake place i think, but thats on the other side of the city..

Im not sure of any well known places out here on the east, but maybe just the local mechanic would be able to let you know... Thats if he is into toranas!

I'm not really looking for a conversion, no, the wallet just won't allow for that. By all accounts what I have should stop me with reasonable success. HQ front ventilated discs and the drums with the 9 inch, standard booster and master cylinder. Thats about the total I know of it, other than the parkbrake is about as soft as a 30c cone in summer and its not much better with the pedal!!

My line of thinking is there must be something amiss with what I've got, but I've no experience with sorting brake problems so was wanting someone with the skills to take a look and come up with a few answers so something can be done.

I'm a bit wary of local guys who say 'yeah, no worries, shouldn't be a problem, I'll have a look and suss something out for you'. Generally means they don't have much of a clue and are just feeling their way, changing parts and charging you for the learning experience!

Cheers,

Sounds like the rear drums aren't working
Cylinders might be siezed
There are probably a few things need checking

Now in Melbourne who do I know that I trust......... hmmmmmmm.........

OK,........ as mentioned there is Peter at Hoppers Stoppers.
They do general brake work as well as their upgrades
Not to mention they build hotrods for people so a walk around his workshop would probably be fun at least
Tell him Neil from Perth sent you....... might not help but can;t hurt

Other than that stedz_lc on here works for ABS somewhere in Melbourne.
Shoot him a PM and find out where he is
They are supposed to be brake specialists too and he's into Toranas

Good luck

Neil

I'd agree Neil, when we had it on the dyno a couple of days ago we couldn't stop the rear wheels with the pedal but had to switch of the motor and slow it down that way. So it might be the proportioning valve or the wheel cylinders are'nt working. This might not be the only problem with the system tho hence why I want to get it checked out thouroughly.

Thanks for the names, I'll give em a shot.

Peace,

The other local place that may be worth giving a buzz to hear what they say is ABS in Ferntree Gully (on Burwood Hwy). I heard they have some fancy drive-on brake testing machine, which tells you about your braking performance at each corner.... I've been meaning to take my Torry down there for years, but haven't got around to doing it yet... I have dealt with the guys there many times before for parts though, and they did my braided front lines as well... they seem pretty good.

From memory, this drive-on testing thing was one of not many in Australia or something... but that was years ago.... they're probably common as now...

It sounds like you should buy yourself a couple of new rear wheel cylinders first, fit them, and bleed the whole system... then see how things feel ?? If they are seized as predicted, the car will most likely be brand new again!
