Hi guys, brand spankin new member,
As posted in the introduction forum I am starting my first car build. All the more luckier for my first build to be on a 76LX SLR5000.
I am starting this new thread for you to follow along and also so I can get feedback, tips and information on parts etc from people who have done a build themselves and anybody else interested.
I am only a young fella so my knowledge is not great , I do have a good team behind me with plenty of knowledge but the more the merrier.

Currently the car is with my panel beater and gets taken for sandblasting this week which brings me to my first questions for the build...

In my list of first things to buy is the flare kit, i don’t want to just buy any kit and hope they are good so I am after some recommendations , I have found a kit from spoilertek bodykits which seems a good option . Anybody here used it before and can confirm ?

Rare spares will love me after this build I may just be their next favourite customer 😂

I will be uploading some photos tomorrow , my photobucket account just needs to be verified

G-day Josh, yeah as Gene said photobucket has been a pain in the ass on here.

I am sure you will find a better way.

What month is your 5000? Before the 1st July pollution rules?

Welcome aboard and look forward to your photos.

Yep, thankfully my SL/R is already flared so I'm not faced with such decisions... but I don't think I could bring myself to cut-up a non-flared car these days, there just aren't that many of them left, especially genuine SL/R's.

But in the end it's your car and if you always wanted one with flares then you'll never be happy without. Unfortunately it's a bit pointless just bolting on flares without cutting the guards as you'll never be able to fill them with rubber.

Your car, Your way. But I'm in the same group that say don't flare it especially as the car is a SLR. Good Luck with your build. I do like the colour.

Only thing I would do is not replace the SLR 5000 stencil on the doors, much prefer the LH series in that regard. I like the stencil on the rear spoiler.

I agree, nice colour. I wouldn’t flare an SLR5000 today though, basically throwing money away. I’d sell it and flare a Sunbird or 6cyl car if you want a flared car. I recently cut up a rust free SLR5000 as it was flared (I wanted the tags for my tag collection) but wouldn’t have done it to a non flared car.

If that is a pre ADR27A which it should be being 5/76, you have probably the most desirable normal SLR5000, that is a 10/74 through to 5/76. These have the highest performance standard 5.0L. The earlier ones and anything after May 1976 have a lot less power standard. Restored to original as possible would be the best investment. But as many have said it’s your car. If it’s missing it’s original engine it probably doesn’t matter as much either.

Great to see another one being saved Josh.

Whats the original colour code?- engine bay looks like Papaya.

Late March- April engine bays went from black to body colour.

Schools out with me Josh weather to flare or not - being what it is punts it into the "leave it unflared" side of things seeing it is uncut

Your car

Looks like you have a pretty sound base to start with and it is always interesting once the paint is off

Plenty to do while it is in the panel shop

Good luck with the build mate and following

Hey mate, leave it unflaired. Yel327 you cut up a 5000 for the tags? Was it not saveable? Come on mate this comment makes no sense? Thats like cutting up a GT Falcon because it has a pop up sunroof, cheers Aaron.

Yes. It was worth more in parts and cut sections than as a car. Plus I’m not interested in dealing with idiots which is what I’d have to do if I advertised it. Body was flared too. So I wrecked it out for double what it was worth and kept the tags. Makes perfect sense to me.

It was a sad reality for lots of lesser spec cars until recently. You’d sleep worse if you heard about the far more valuable cars I wrecked and cut up than an SLR.
