Griceys last hatch had the entire lip at the front of the rear wheel opening removed to be level with the inner guard at the bottom.

^ You can do stuff like that, but it doesn't make any difference for wheel clearance (and you need to be mindful that there still needs to be somewhere to bolt the flare up against at the front and the back).

 

What wheel clearance is being added to your hatch now, Greg?
