GTR or S model?

I know you can spot a GTR from the VIN number, but I'm just wondering whether its possible to find out any details of an LJ purely from the chassis number, rather than relying on ID tags.
Is there database somewhere which lists chassis numbers and the model / vehicle options?
Thanks in advance!

LJ TORANA SEDAN 2 DOOR
5/73 BLJ#####B <-- chassis number
So surely ID plates can be stolen / swapped around. Logic would mean that there should be a record of genuine GTRs based on the chassis number, the only number which is actually part of the car. The other numbers are just pop-rivetted on!

you may find a number (written in marker) under the ADR tag that will tell you a missing tag info

Are there any tell tale signs with the actual car body I can look out for then?

1/ fluted guards , look for factory spot welds where guards are welded to body.
S model doesnt have these unless they have been added on later
2/ chrome strip from front of car to rear of car along the side of body , look for rivet holes or where they could have been on a S model
otherwise bodies are identical

lj never had them.look at the C pillar from the inside and see if you can see where the holes from the "S" badge have been welded up. I know the LC's had them, I dont know about LJ's
but i belive the S had a extra spare wheel bracket on the boot floor sombody with a S maybe able to conferm this

just on a side note, in the last pic of the march 17th gtr xu1, in the top left hand corner just above the fuel tank theres a brass nut. Apparently only LJ XU1s and not 100% but maybe GTRs had those too.

The usual spots have been mentioned but what about the suspension.
The LC GTR has Ferguson Tractor stiffness but I'm not sure about the LJ GTR.
I would presume that the S model would have normal suspension if not modified therefore if you bounced each guard up and down and then let go it should go up and then settle down about halfway of the vertical travel.
If it keeps on bouncing for a little while then the shockies are stuffed under that guard.
Mine bounce bugger all because of the stiff suspension AND yes it rides like a Ferguson Tractor AND, I wouldn't have it any other way.
Hope this helps, regards .................. Barry
