Double chassis numbers

Hey guys, while putting the engine back in my car, I've given the engine bay a quick tidy up, and discovered the chassis numbers.... Both of them...

The upper one matches the body tag, a BLH, and the front one starts with CLX

Car is supposed to be an LH

Any ideas on why the higher number would have been punched in?

It's very far from original and made of a mismatch of parts, but this confuses me even more, as I'm fairly sure it's an LH body...? f4bba308119350088ec5c765344082b3.jpg

Hard to say without a lot more detail, but two theories occur to me... either it's had a front-end smash and been repaired with parts from another car... or the CLX number is correct and the BLH tags have been swapped (meaning it may not actually be an SLR)?

 

Was the CLX number covered up with something?

 

Next thing I'd be doing is to figure out whether it is an LH or an LX shell? The two easiest items to pick would be:

 

1) Does it have the brace running across the boot between the tail lights?

2) Where do the rear seat belts mount (C-pillar or parcel shelf)?

My guess is has had a front end repair using an LX cut section and that BLH number has been added to match the tags. Or the other as Bigfella has alluded to, that is the LH tags have been put on an LX body.

So the CLX was under bog, a layer of original colour persian sand, more filler then then respray colour.

Dad thinks maybe chopped in sections from an accident too?

Parcel shelf seatbelt mounts look orig yeah? but no boot bar between the lights.

There is a possibility you may have the body shell from a stolen LX Torana.

I'd assume more likely the repaired route, the front panel isn't orig, and non standard radiator

I'd assume, because the tags are LH8VD69, that someone has put them on a different car to artificially increase the value. That seems like the most obvious scenario to me?

 

BTW, the "proper" way to sort this out is to get the police involved, they will likely impound the car for forensic examination and ask a heap of "who's responsible" and "where'd ya get it" type questions.

 

If the old (CLX) chassis number comes up stolen you lose your car. If not, they will issue you a "police number" and you'll need to have someone strike-out the other two chassis numbers and stamp a third (police number) on it. That will then be the legal identifier.

 

I'm not telling you what to do, but it depends on what you're planning to do with the car. If thinking of selling it then it would be worth it to get it sorted out, otherwise the next guy is buying a can of worms.

Nah the tags arnt a vd, just a vc. So no value increase on that one.

Revs had no hit either, did that one.

And its not going up for sale, I'm just curious to know it's story!

Well at least you now know that you’ve got an LX and not an LH after all these years. Had you previously used the CLX chassis number for rego?

Ohhh, yeah, that's what it looks like. So just call it that. Nfi what is was. Its got UC bits mixed in too!

Spoke to Holden historical, there's no way to tell what it was, most likely the result of progressive dodgy/cheap repairs back in the day.

Oh well. Doesn't really bother me. It's still or Torana

I know it's obvious, but the chassis number stamp under the brake bias switch is not a Holden location for a chassis number, so it has been added later in life. There are also a few differences between early and late LHs, to do with evap emission control. I can see a few dents around the original Holden location for the chassis number which is where the evap canister bracket is welded in later LHs and all LXs. I wonder if someone has crudely removed the evap canister and those welds, making it look more like an early LH, but leaving the dents? Something else to check on the fuel tank. Early LH's had only two breather vent pipes from the tank which ran up in the rear wheel arches above the rear wheels, and were held into place by welded on folding brackets. If those brackets are there, it's probably an early LH body. If not, late LH or LX.

 

Late LHs and all LXs had a fuel vapor separator mounted to the body on the front of the passenger side of the fuel tank (bolted to the body) with three pipes, two were connected to the driver's side of the fuel tank, and one to the passenger side, also from memory held on to the car body with fold over brackets.

Really needs to be sorted out with a Police number.

Otherwise it may end up being a few lost hours at a Police station trying to explain things.

If the body number that is in the correct original location matches all the other details then the other is of no relevance and god knows why it’s there. Assuming it has factory appearance it’s likely someone has used metal from a wreck to make a repair.

 

if this is the case then I can see a reasonable case for permanently destroying that number.

Im thinking that if it got inspected, and the other number was noticed, then there would be questions to answer about both numbers.

A Police number would be issued, but you would have to strike out both of the other numbers more than likely.
