I have done this heaps of times, I still buy pool/snooker balls for gear knobs, although these days I stick to black, red or white snooker balls !!

I get them from a billiards shop, about $8 ea, and drill and tap them to suit the application. They work out great and are very durable.

I purchased a plastic one from a swap meet a couple of years ago. It has a threadless sleeve with a grub screw to hold it in place.

Now I have a real one which is much nicer in the palm. As chevy_253_torana said, a tapped out sleeve would be perfect as the plastic one with the grub screw wobbled a little. Even a nut sunk into the ball and glued in would probably work.

I can measure the pitch of the gearstick thread if you like so you can get an exact match for a nut/threaded sleeve?

Cheers
Jim

yep you keep your fluufy balls to yourself, hehehe :P

You can be defected for these btw.
Unless you have a shift pattern on the console ala SLR.

Could you be defected if you have a Rares knob on a Aussie Four speed and no console with the shift pattern?

I dont see why not, you would just have to tap the thread to suit.

i am about to make something similar for my car, I am getting a little bit sick of my current shift knob

The stuff billiard balls are made of is fairly tough (as you would imagine).
I have never had a thread strip in one yet, so no need to fit a brass insert.

Problem with the trimatic shifter is you need a button to press for the safety lockout... and the top of teh standard shifter is an oval from memory!

Cheers!

Correct, the Trimatic shifter is a pain in the ass.
It's an oval shape, I could not find a damn thing aftermarket that would fit it, everywhere pretty much said "the old trimatic oval shape? no chance"

I ended up finding a perfectly good Torana that was being wrecked, ripped out every little piece I needed, handbrake release knob, T-Bar shifter + both front door handles in chamois that cleaned up looking like new/my original ones all for a nice sumly price of something like $2.50 :)

If anybody knows where to get a variety of aftermarket stuff for the traimatic shifter I'd be interested in grabbing a spare! As that GODDAMN BUTTON loves to go flying from time to time when down in L1 and rarely L2.

And I'm pretty sure one of these days I'm going to lose it, even though I'm a little more careful with it now :)

if you get defected for the shifter knob then the cop would have to know those cars inside out luckily not many out there would speaking of which those top tbar covers for the v8 trimatic shifters ... hard to come by ??? around how much am i looking at ??

personally i cant see anything beating either a b&m rachet shifter or the older hemi style pistol grip ... would kill for one of those in the torrie!!

I have a spare SS Trimatic knob, NOS in box......
Still have the box for the one in the car too i think......

Cop doesn't need to know any car inside out for this defect, as it states a shift pattern must be visible for a manual transmission - no car is immune, I wish more ricers got done for this - hence all shift knobs began having it impressed on the top.

Grant..
