Thanks Adam,
I will give the timing a tweak on your advice. I drove the car up the driveway which is when it was often spluttering. Involves a 1:8 grade followed by a 90 degree turn and tight park next to mums Audi. It would stall when I shut the throttle for the last low speed manoeuvre. So I pulled plugs after that. No worries about mid and WOT performance. Hopefully run like a top now. Thanks fellas for your input.

New cap for the VH 202 Bosch ekectronic distributor was $40. The rotor looked ok but I thought I’d just get a new one. Wait for it………….
$70! Very hard to get now. At least it isn’t points which are officially obsolete now.

Top tip, Adam, I'll have to remember that one
You're the sparkplug whisperer

That sent me backup to the photo for another look
I see now, Clay, there is something funny going on
with those front 3 plugs. Gradually worse from #3
to #1.
Hope it's easy to find whats going on there

Yes the cap was only $40 Bruce. Not unreasonable. Car Parts Plus are pretty good on prices and best of all they have most of the relatively obscure stuff on stock. The don't look at you dumbly when you ask for a water pump for a red motor.

12.5 litres/100km?

22.5 miles/gallon.

Guess that isnt too bad for an old car.

I could get 26 miles/gallon out of my old 186 powered LC.

When I had the engine worked a bit, the best I could do was 6 miles/gallon.

Not much fun with a 10 gallon tank. lol

Im getting around that on average with my VF SS LS3

My VE SS averaged about the same, but was driven very spiritedly most of the time.

I managed 7.0 litres/100km on a freeway run from Sydney to Newcastle with an average speed of slightly over the speed limit. Bookable speed.

About 40 miles/gallon.

Wonder these days why people worry about fuel consumption with V8s

Thats a stupid price for a rotor button.

But guess they are becoming harder to find.

Might check with a mate to see if he has any old stuff left from when they had a servo.

But think they might have got dumped.

They had lots of stuff for old school cars when they shut shop.

Cheers

Rob

I got 30mpg on the drive from Adelaide to Toowoomba on the fresh engine with a tail wind Rob.

Reset the timing to 7. Was running 9degrees. It may even behave on 91 now.

A mate had an ex Army HR wagon with a 161 low compression engine.

It got 30 mpg day in day out, no matter how you drove it.

Good old bus that one.

Cheers

Did a run on 91 getting 23.5mpg. It was a cocktail with some 98 already in the tank. Filled with 91 again and noticed a very slight ping way down low. I reckon I can notice a fall off in pick-up.

Can anyone advise me on running this 1/4npt temp gauge sender while retaining idiot light, or too hard? The oil won't be a problem, been there. I think last time I did the temp gauge was a blue head and it had a spare port I used.

Clay, you could use a thermostat housing (the cast iron part, not the alloy cover) with the threaded port on the drivers side.

You will also need an adapter to screw into the housing to install the sensor into.

Clay, you probly can run both your Idiot light and temp gauge..

A mate has an electric gauge sender into his thermostat housing on EH.
And his idiot light sender plumbed into the rear of head heater hose outlet.

So, its doable.

Cheers Jaso. Reading the instructions I remember that the gauge has programmable alarms. Much Moe betterer than an idiot light.

26mpg or 11 l/100km on a full tank of 91.

There was a slight splutter around 4000rpm but de-coke run seems to have cleared it. Went to GPS measured 118kmh in second for a calculated 5000rpm. Smooth as silk and just wanted to keep revving.

Cam I have in the HP 186 has a quoted lift of 0.429” but I think Dave said that would be valve lift with standard 1.5 rocker, rather than pushrod lift. Thought that might explain why I broke a couple. Anyway being frivolous, I laid out $250 or so for a set of the stainless crow rollers problem solved.

By the cast date could well be 149 head. I wonder what the lift was on the HD HR X2 cam, not that it was matched to 149 head, but was apparently a high lift cam.

Clay, HD & HR X2, all 161S, 173S & 186S engines used the same camshaft with lift at the lobe of .2255", lift at the valve of .338"

Std 149 & 179 camshafts are listed as having the same lift figures as the X2/S camshaft.

.2255" lift at the lobe x 1.5 = .338" at the valve.

The X2/S camshaft is not the same as a std cam. The timing, duration and overlap are more aggressive than the std red 6 cam but they were not a high lift cam.
