Ian, if you mean the cable that comes out of the top of the shelf , I’m pretty sure it was just a blob of goop
Around the cable.

Paul, there is a rubber grommet. LC have a small grommet on the cable where it penetrates through the upper dash panel and LJ have a larger rubber grommet.

Don't know about the grommet in those pics. The original cable in my LJ the grommet was just flat on both sides, as are the grommets on the spare part replacement cables. Nothing like the one in those pics.

IIRC Marty found a work around for the grommet during the resto of his LJ. Search the Marty Report.

Well there ya go! Never knew that!
Did they have a sealant additional to the grommet?

If I can't find anything suitable, I think I will use a 17mm grommet, and some black silastic.

Yes, they had a blob of mastic type sealant covering the grommet.

I guess it wasn’t seen as it’s under the goop.

GMH did a pretty rough job when they put the sealant over the grommet. They were quite messy. Do ut left handed if you want it to look original.

Sure did James, I’ve seen original XU1s with that sealant obviously formed by hand because you can see the finger marks .

This is what we’re talking about, I haven’t done anything with mine yet but I’ll find a rubber seal for it sometime,it could be similar to the reverse switch wiring grommet on the transmission tunnel.

The hole for the cable in LJ's is much bigger than that, I'd say 3/4" from memory.

On your wiper motor you've got a bolt holding the front plate just below the earth strap bolt. On LC and LJ's that one should be left empty. Apparently it was there for the HQ earth strap IIRC.

The LC grommet must be quite small then .

Sorry Ian, AFAIK the grommet was installed onto the cable before the plastic end was moulded on during manufacture back in the 70's or 80's.

I have no idea if repro grommets are available.

Have a look at Fitch or similar. Just have to cut it and slip over the cable. Cut won't be noticeable.

You'll be surprised just how far they will stretch, Use a pair of circlip pliers and a smidge of rubber grease.

Ah, that's better. I only know this by making the same mistake in the past myself and having a very knowledgeable friend inform me of how they should be.
