My black duct has this ring in the end of it on the heater box end , did all the ducts have this as my corresponding blue one hasn't got anything . Trying to work out its purpose , is it to just stiffen the end up a bit so it fits better in the heater box?

Looks like something fabricated from thick Klinger gasket paper to me?

Probably find the duct was squashed at some point and that helped get it back into shape

Looks to me like someone has put it in as a restrictor so the air flow to the drivers side delivered more air for improved demisting.

I’m curious if anyone else has one like this , it certainly looks like it was fitted at factory . I reckon the theory of directing some more air to drivers side is a good one

The more air to drivers side theory turns out is not a good one as just noticed the black one is labeled RH so drivers side

Over the years I have seen plenty of these ducts left on the right and right on left although they have slightly different angles.

Yeah I lined them up to try and see the difference and they almost look identical so not sure why they are RH and LH

I think someone had fitted a turbo to their fan assembly and the ducting was collapsing so they strengthened it with a ring inside. 😁

My 76 Hatch (originally A/C) has the restrictor shown above in both ducts (black and blue).

Pretty sure they would have been added to the design by the HVAC development guys, during the Engineering program, to balance air flow.

Mine is also factory AC and my black one is original but I lost my blue one and had to get another so maybe these were only fitted to cars with AC since nobody else has said they’ve seen this before . Checked parts book and there is not a different part number for AC

I still have an LH V8 factory A/C setup buried up on my mezzanine somewhere. Will see if I can spot the ducts for colour. I had a full 6cyl setup too that I pulled out of an LH SL/R at a scrap yard years ago. I had left it inside the cabin of my old Landrover ute that got stolen a few days after. It had at least one blue duct.
