Hi Guys,

While scouring the for sale adds and garage sales I came across and brought a Banjo Diff head thats an LSD Fine Spline unit in 3.36 ratio. Even though my SL/R has a 2.78 Fine Spline LSD I grabbed it for spare parts.

My question is what model holdens would have used this diff head? GTR's? Utes?

Cheers

Scott

What do you mean by "diff head".

If you mean the whole banjo centre, 3.36 -3.9 banjo (inc LSD) were only ever used behind 6cyl. Being fine spline it narrows down to the last run of LJ XU1 or later LX or HX/HZ. You could also use the LSD and gears in a UC or a 6cyl VB-VH or WB 6cyl ute or van.

Yes that was as I thought, in that ratio was only behind 6cyl vehicles. It's good to know that it maybe of help to someone restoring an XU1. You mention LJ... But not the case for the LC?
And yes over here in kiwi-land we call them diff heads. So I'll add that to the list of language differences along with Jandals and Thongs!... LOL

I didn’t know that the centre spheres were shared. New about the gears. Makes sense.

With the right axles would be a nice upgrade to any car running banjo.

No, LC and LJ were coarse spline like all other banjo at the time. Only those final lot of LJ XU1's had fine spline axles. After that the only cars to get fine spline axles until about 1977 were V8 LH, and those were only the 2.78 or 3.08 centres.

My May '76 built LX L31 SS had fine spline axles in the factory diff. Was GU7 (2.78) centre with baffles in the housing too. Have heard of a few factory L31 cars that were like this.

Still have the car but stupidly sold the diff late 90's to fit a 9".

As it should. I stated V8 LH but by extension that includes (as in runs into) V8 LX. All of the 5.0L banjos I've pulled apart had baffles in them, but that is only 2 or 3. I think two of those were LH diffs.
