Inquiring as to availability of the XU1 nibless rims (4). My car came with the Sprint masters which are not period for a 5/72 car. Id like to see if any are around which are genuine and in VGC. Will need caps and dress rims and wheel nuts. Feel free to rip me off as I know they are hard to find.

My spare nibless is dated 3/72 from memory.

I bought a set of xu1 caps, apparently, in fair condition 2 years ago for $100. Dress rings are available reproduction about $800 a set.

I think the genuine rims are going to be the difficult items to source out. Someone would have them but don't want or need to part with them. The wheels are the only item/s I need to bring my XU1 back to all original which is my goal.

Last single one I saw was $700 on ebay.

Just get standard rims and have the cap retainers knocked off on a lathe.

The dress rims, caps and nuts will cost you a small fortune as it is.. unless ya getting repros of those in which case why bother with genuine rims?

I'm one of those idiot rivet counters so would happily pay whatever for the unmolested nibless rims etc.

Can you get some made using Commodore L centres in original LJ bands?

Or get some stock ones and shrink/grind the nibs out.

For a road car why would it matter? I'm talking about the instance where you cannot buy any but want them to look right.

You can't notice much looking at them, apart from mainly the welding on the back.

So these are $1,800 & not welded on the back, like an original xu1 nibless wheel ?

They be spot welded. Look like a bit of an offset for 5” rims?

Correct, not welded because they are not nibless rims. They are std 13 X 5.5" GTR rims that have had the nibs pressed back down and machined to clean up the surface to look like nibless rims.

Well, instead of him calling them replicas, maybe he could call them, sort of similar, because at $1,800, if i looked at buying a set of replica wheels. I would expect them to be welded on the back. $1,000 over priced, let's face it !

In reality probably no different to people cutting the centres out of L34 rims and welding in HK centres. Or vice versa. To make them look right. Lot of $ though.

If they were, fully welded and unpickable, then that would be fine. But they're just not close enough at $1,800, that's almost 2 grand for a set of slightly modified basic torana rims. 2 grand is a fair bit of coin.

Jeezus how much do they want for a set of the real thing then?
I got a set 35 years ago to replace some chromies I smacked up on a kerb, trim rings, caps, nuts and all
Couldn’t wait to get rid of them, crappy black boring things, it had to be mags
Wish I still had them now
