ADR24 isn’t applicable to HK or HT-HG or most XU1. Or all GT-HO. It came in on 1/1/73.

And it’s the car with 3 x 68kg passengers. Then it’s done after a mile or 1600km. A car like an XY GT-HO or HT-HG GTS350 is almost doing 100mph after 400m with two people and timing gear on the car. Either will easily ee be over 130mph by 1600m. A GTS327 will get there slower but will still do it. But ADR24 doesn’t apply to them, so as far as I know it’s the car’s actual top speed as calculated or published.

From what I understand the problem is trying to apply modern stuff to these oldies.

When I've gone to a tyre shop here in qld,they have looked at the top speed on our speedo. The cluby is like 250 or 260. So it has to legally have a zr rated tyre. They have said that anything lower, my insurance could deny any claim. I've seen 205/60/13 on 5.5" torana gtr rims & i thought that they looked fine. Not to much buldge.

Oh FFS, the red band is a deeper red on the 68 model tyres compared to those used on the 69 models. Highly likely there were unintended colour variations between batches.

Anyway, what use is two tyres for your show car to score brownie points if you can't get another two with the exact same shade of red band?

I'm now considering these. Slightly bigger circumference than original and hopefully suited to 5.5 steel rims. I'd rather see Bridgestone on a tyre than Nankang just for 'old school' looks.

Its good when you get those buy 4 pay for 3 deals. I did that with my Ram, makes a big difference when you are buying a tyre like a 295/70/18 LT Yokohama!

Surprising how much shorter these tyres are. Maybe they will grow a bit once on a rim with air in them? My car revs hard enough as it is @ 100….. bloody 3.55 diff…

What are you doing with a 3.55 diff? Those are 6cyl only and almost exclusively meant for cars with 14" tyres! V8's with banjos were supposed to be never made with anything other than 2.78 or 3.08, as they are the only V8 banjos. Originally made by Borg Warner from nodular iron for GMH, whereas the 6cyl centres were just grey iron. The only place I have ever seen any reference to any V8 Holden or V8 optioned Torana being actually built in an Assembly Plant with a banjo other than 2.78 or 3.08 is the HT V8 pilots that were optioned with 4spd manual. All of these (or almost all of these) across all Assembly Plants are shown as built with M21 and 3.36. I thought when I first saw this that they must have been fitted with a Salisbury but the option code is also there for a 3.36 banjo. Not sure how this ever got through or if someone actually realised the mistake and changed them to 3.08. I think what happened was 3.36 was the standard rear axle on a HK V8 manual and they just copied this across to the HT pilot build data, but didn't realise that a 253 manual was supposed to get a 3.08 rear axle and needed to change that on the 4spd manuals. They got the 3spd manuals right as all of those in the HT pilots are 3.08 banjo, but this will probably be because there were no V8 3spd HK's.

When I got the car, it had a 3.08, NON-LSD coarse spline centre in it. 

 

I searched for a fine spline LSD 2.78 with no luck. In the end I was able to source a 3.55 LSD fine spline in Tasmania...

 

I didnt know a great deal about Torana's etc back in 2011 when I started so didnt even realise there was a difference in the covers/mounting for 2.78/3.08  - 3.36/3.55

 

The workshop I took the rear end to for overhaul was able to get the 3.55 to fit my housing without issue. My housing has axle baffles and the centre mount has all studs except for long bolts at 6 & 7 o'clock. 

 

I have a 2.78 gear set now. But not sure it would fit the current LSD fine spline hemisphere I have...??????

Interesting...had an old mate who's Dad bought a new LH SL/R 4.2l in '74 to tow his caravan. Always remember it being super low geared. Thought it was a 3.55, maybe it was a 3.36. Dunno.

3.08 (manual) or 2.78 (auto). No other available rear axle ratios, although if you really tried hard and someone was prepared to order it for you, you'd possibly have been able to order L32 M40 GU4. GV7 (3.55) doesn't even exist in the POA list for LH (it was removed in July 1974, not sure what it was against prior to that).

 

Remember that 3.55:1 with 13" tyres would be the equivalent of about 4.0:1 or taller with 14" tyres. That is why L31 M21 in Torana came with 2.78:1 because of the 13" tyres, whereas L31 M21 in a Holden with 14" tyres always came with 3.36 unless someone optioned 3.08 or 3.55 (either of which is very rare) - it is about the same overall gearing 2.78 with 13" vs 3.36 with 14".

EH to HR generally had the 3.55 rear I thought. Though they were 13” they ran fairly tall cross ply tyres. They were a bit heavier than an LC at around 1250kg.

I might start a new post on the diff. Someone might know if the 2.78 crown wheel will fit the current LSD hemisphere I have.

I was talking about the later cars Clay. I don't have all the earlier stuff but HD for example were 3.55 on a manual standard and you could option 3.36 with option 531. Auto were standard with 3.36 and optional with 3.55 with option 532. These were all lower performance engines though except for the 140hp X2. Tyres were just under 24" diameter (607mm) which compared to LH the tallest tyre is the B78L13 which is 579mm diameter which is just under 5% smaller than the HD tyres. Note that 3.55 is about 5.6% lower ratio than 3.36, so an LH with a standard tyre with a 3.36 rear end would be almost the same gearing as a HD with a standard tyre with a 3.55 rear end. Note that the LH B70H13 (V8 SLR) is only about 559mm diameter which is about 8.6% smaller than the HD's tyres. Which is damn close to the 9.1% difference between 3.36 and 3.08.
