Just trying to familiarize myself with what 'normal' is as I get this car back to semi-regular use on the road.

Just a 202 and Trimatic with thermo fans on it. At full op temp she sits right about middle of the gauge (in the middle of the "normal" band). My thermo controller has its own temp sensor which I've mounted in the radiator upper tank beside the coolant inlet. Mid gauge on the cluster is resulting in coolant temps of 90 degrees.

In principle this doesn't seem bad but I remember from the old days my UC used to happily sit on the low mark of normal on the gauge (coolant temp would be about 75 there I think). What do people regard as normal ? Am I just used to manuals (this is my first auto) and they run cooler or should I be looking to fit a lower temp thermostat given we're still a long way from full summer heat.

Thanks

Matt

I’m pretty sure by the UC they used a 190 degrees f (88 degrees C) for emission purposes where as earlier 202s used a 180 degree thermostat.

90 degrees is perfect for fuel efficiency

I would also think that 90 C is about normal

My UC 202 manual usually runs in the middle of the Normal range.

Sitting at traffic lights it get up to almost the upper mark in Normal before the thermo fan kicks in.

I am using a VDO Temp Switch 230.079 (95 on - 90 off) in the lower thermostat housing.

I think that this is a bit high.

Dunno about the thermostat.

I used to use an EH temp light (on @96 deg) to trigger the relay to the thermo. Never had an issue.

Thanks for the replies. I'm figuring that everything is normal and it was just my memory of my old car. In fact I think the thermostat in this one is a bit slow as if its stuck partially open but then the emissions gear that would help speed up the warm up is curiously absent.

I'm not losing any radiator fluid so I might just up the fan temp and bit and see what happens.

Cheers!
