Hi All

Can you put a oil sender unit in Petrol, Metho, Turps, Thinners, etc, to clean the insides? Not sure what's inside it - rubber?

My LC sat in a garage for 15 years, so the oil would have solidified.

The gauge is slow to respond, and I think its clogged.

Cheers

John

I would use Kerosene to wash it down however I don't know if any oil actually goes inside the sender unit. Never pulled on apart but I expect there will be some sort of actuating piston upon which the oil pushes.

I'd be careful of using thinners to be on the safe side. I would put it in a sonic cleaner in kerosene or similar. I do use petrol in the sonic cleaner, but always nervously. A mate puts the parts in zip lock bags with petrol, and water on the outside.

Thank You

I will try Kero. If all else fails I will buy another one.

FYI

Electric sensor units

Sensor units for electric gauges work by sliding a wiper up a curved blade of known resistance. The wiper is moved by a diaphragm which keeps the sender oil-tight.

I took the Oil Sender off this morning and as per advice I soaked it in Kero in a sealed container and gave it a good shake.

Then taped in on the workbench and a spray of compressed air. I was surprised with the old oil that came out with each tap, although only a few drops each time. But it added up.

Did this many times over.

Fitted it again with thread tape and started the engine. Well, instant response at the gauge. Normally I have to wait many seconds before the gauge moves.

Gave her a rev and instant response on the oil gauge. Normally it doesn't really move unless I'm on the motorway at speed.

Thanks Dave and Clay
