Hi an XY GT falcon apparently a barn find locked away for the last 40 years is now up for auction, The GT falcon is unreserved and in need of a full resto, the last bid was a staggering  356.000 k  with close to 400 bids not including the 7.5 Buyers premium and the bids are still coming,

The auction house is Grays auctions, I thought that the muscle cars have slowed down , Judging by the GT Falcon it looks like the muscle cars are on there way slowly getting back to normal,

what do you guys think

Seems to be a little spark in the market for the good/ rare cars, but 2nd level still flat?

Barn finds do my head in.
I love the fact that they have sat untouched for years, and as such, there's a chance they are original, un molested and have all the right bits.
However, they wouldn't/ couldn't be fun to drive, if they actual went.
Once you restore them,... well...the barn find magic has gone.
Now you have a hugely expensive car, thst's just like a lot of others?

Some may enjoy the challenge of bringing it back to former glory and I get that.
Others may need somewhere to spend " cash".

Good luck to them, maybe they are true enthusiasts, and don't care about the investment angle.
p.s. I did love that XY GT bronze wine farmer's car that was doing the rounds a few years back..bits of wood and wire holding the seat in place etc

I'm generally not a huge "barn find" fan myself (cars are meant to be driven not left sitting stagnant) - but I do love the story behind this particular XY.

Well worth the watch if you haven't seen it:

Way too many $ despite what it is. It’s just an XY GT! I’d understand if it was a GT-HO. But this is the equivalent of a 5.0L SL/R or a HQ GTS sedan. It’s not a factory race car, it’s the next car down. Great car, but $350k? You’d probably be able to buy a good XW GT-HO for that.

To think my mate sold his XYGT for 40 K back in the day

Insane prices

Yeah, a couple of decades ago now, a good mate of mine split-up with his misses and ended-up topping himself, but afterward his misses rang me up and basically wanted all his "car junk" gone, including: an XY GT lookalike; a 351 XC coupe that he used to drag race; a "spare" XB coupe; a big old LHD Galaxy that he imported from the States himself (which had a very healthy 460 big block built and ready to drop into it); and an ex-HWP 351 manual XD sedan (and that was just the highlights, there was sheds and shipping containers full of parts as well)! Not being into Fords myself, and not having enough shed space for the cars I already had, I turned her down.

In the immortal words of the late great Chad Morgan: "If I could only just go back and know what I know now."

P.S. Why is this thread in the HB-LC-TA-LJ forum?

Restored well an XY GT is worth over $250k now, but this one is lots more than that and probably needs a lot more spent!

There's something 'fishy' about that auction.

With 12 hrs remaining after 396 bids it was at $353,700.

Then with 21 mins remaining after 398 bids the figure was $222,300.

It finished at $230,000. Then they said it "sold"for $396,000 !

Am I missing something here ?

Apparently fake bidders were caught out and their bids removed according to the Auction House. Not sure of the final price but it dropped 100k yesterday.

Wonder what suburb that was in. Bet that house sold for 5x or more what the car did…

A Google look-see ( rough) shows the following -

House price in that area in 1971 apprx 13k, median house price there now appr 1442k = appx 111 times the price

Falcoon GT in 1971 apprx 5k, car sold 220k = appx 46 times

Assume the car was un rego'd and not insured, then zero holding costs.

The house would have had substantial holding costs over that period, rates, insurance, interest, maint. cost etc.....but reckon it still would come out in front.

But, if you sell your old house no one cares, but the GT makes a good story.

Can't live on stories though.

Cheers.

Yeah that house would be worth more than 5 times. Looked a decent size block too.
