Hi All

I have an LC with a 173. When it is first started in the morning it clatters for a few seconds before oil pressure gets up.

After that no noise each time I start it for the rest of the day

Yep. I know Hydraulic Lifter bleeding down overnight.

Changed the oil - Penrite HPR30 and filter even though the oil was relatively new. No difference.

Must be the lifters, even though they were changed with brand new lifters when I refurbished the car 3 years ago.

The local spare parts place only had two lifters, so I spent weeks taking off the rocker cover and side plates and replacing two lifters in each cylinder, each day, and then starting the engine each morning. No difference.

Changed the oil again - Nulon Full Synthetic. No difference.

Bought a full set of CROW cams Hydraulic lifters and fitted them. No Difference

Changed the oil back to HPR30 and fitted High Flow oil filter - Z30ST with Silicone Anti Drain Back Flow Valve. No difference

I can't think of anything else that would make the engine "clatter" for a few seconds until oil pressure happens. The engine has good oil pressure.

If it was a Big End, Gudgeon, Cam Shaft Bearing, it would be constant all the time.

Any ideas Team?

Regards

John

Stop worrying about it. If the noise goes away within 15 - 30 seconds of starting then all is fine. Sit back and relax with a dose of your favorite poison.

Really ????????????????????????

Noise goes away in about 5 seconds.

Isn't that damaging the cam lobes?

Also the "clatter" was never there before. Why would it just start now even with new lifters?

No not damaging the cam lobes. Some lifter chatter at start up is not abnormal.

Thank You. I will get some ear muffs.

I have anti-pump up lifters in my 202. Valve train clatter at idle is the norm.

Yeah don’t stress if the noise goes after a few seconds.
It’s pretty normal for these old girls.
Reading your first post I was thinking filter, it’s the filter, the filter has no drain back valve! But you covered that 👍 but did you change filters every time you changed oil?
I only ask as like everything you may get a faulty one.
I was changing oil in my 202 way back when Ryco was first advertising their filters had drainback valves when THEY DIDNT! Lying c&@ts!!!!
My motor ticked like a bitch in the morning.
My mad mate said go & buy a Holden filter!
Bingo! no more rattley motor at start up. My 202 was fresh almost zero k’s at the time.
Is your motor fresh or got some or shitloads of k’s on it?
Do you drive it daily?
Either way it’s a good donk if it has a tick for a few seconds first thing then goes away.
Let it warm up a little & drive & enjoy😁 don’t stress 👍

The RYCO Z30ST oil filter does have an Anti Drain Back Flow Valve.

The motors only done 57,000 miles and I drive it every day.

I understand it is probably normal, but the noise has only just recently started and then with the lifters replaced with a brand new set of lifters you would expect no bleed back or noise.

Why would new lifters "clatter". They should hold pressure.

It will likely just be some clicking at the rocker arms, pretty normal for an old Holden 6.

The noise may have always been there but you have only just noticed it?

Did you set the preload on the lifters properly when you installed them?

Cheers

Hi Rob

I bled the air out of them. Is this what you mean by preload?

The head has been shaved 30thou so Tappet clearance shouldn't be an issue.

Hydraulic lifters bleed down against the valve spring pressure, esp with valves being held open by the camshaft over a period of time. Clatter at start up is normal until those lifters pump back up.

How long does it take for your oil pressure to show up?
They would have to clatter until the pressure can fill up the lifter’s
bottom pressure chamber to take up the valve train slack

Oil Pressure builds up very quick and that's when the noise goes. Obviously, the lifters receiving oil.

As Per Above - Thank You. I will get some ear muffs.

Do you have bridge rockers or independent rockers?

Bridge rockers dont require any preloading.

Independent ones do.

Dredging through old info in my brain here.

Cheers
