Hi Guys,

Looking at buying a LX SS Hatch. Its had its ID tags removed, all three are framed in a letter from Holden certifying them.

Question is, how do you know these tags belong to the car?

Tags seem to match the colour, body style, luxury level etc…..is there anything else I should be looking for?

Thanks all!

What do you mean by framed? Not the physical metal tags i presume?

Do you have the physical tags? If so there is a way to tell if they belong to your body and if they do you should reattach them. If not then you have nothing but dust.

What engine is it from factory? If its a 5 litre than no tags will hurt the value more than if it was a 253 or a 202.

Look for the chassis # on the car and make sure it matches the one on the tags. You will find the chassis # near the carbon canister and close to radiator mounts.Attached File  tapatalk_-1477569176_450x600.jpg   22.78K   7 downloads

A photo of the tags themselves may help. We can at least tell you if they are all from the same car. Once that is established, there are other clues in the body that can help confirm if they came from that car.

Not sure. I’m trying to get a better photo of the tag that is just black. Do the two that are visible look ok? It does look like a Y where it should actually be a V on one of the tags. Most other tags I’ve seen are in better condition.

The letter from Holden only decodes the tags, it gives no verification that they belong to a particular car.

Exactly right, so with so many that take their tags off, how do they prove they actually came from their car?

Whats the body number on the car?

Should be CLX 038253M.  A nice clear photo of that to make sure it isn't a re-stamp would be good.

There is no such thing as an 8YD77 so I reckon the BODY plate is good, although it is in terrible condition.  Almost looks like it has been in a fire.  The body number is also about right for a 4-77 car.  The compliance plate is for a manual, and has the correct ADR's for a 1977 model.

I have asked for one and am waiting. It does look like it has been in a fire or heavily compressed. The car is a manual 253, so I guess if the chassis number on the car matches the tags then its good?
