Bit of light fill work.

Of what goes on, 95% gets sanded off. Its looks exhausting from my perspective but very rewarding from an attention to detail perspective.

Now quite the “snow” drift under the car.

One my favourite parts of tarting up old cars is that you are only ever a complacency away from a kick in the nuts….

This week’s surprise

Certainly not as bad as others have had. Unfortunately there isn’t an available piece for this so its all a big time consuming jigsaw where you have to make the pieces as you go.

A bit more progress on the door corner.

Attached File  IMG_6333.jpeg   169.08K   3 downloads

Attached File  Attachment 13.jpeg   95.56K   3 downloads

But of course the top of the front edge needed work….

Attached File  Attachment.jpeg   101.23K   3 downloads

Fortunately it survived splitting the front edge and the wire wheel relatively well.

Attached File  Attachment 8.jpeg   119.77K   3 downloads

So it was welded up bit by bit.

A lot of extra surprise work for a door that looked “rust free”….

Getting into fiddly time now and finding a few interesting things. Window surrounds and B pillars back to bare.

Little left and right stamps for the rear quarters. Hard to imagine these would be easily confused!

And the stamps are so small I image they might be hard to read on Monday morning or after lunch at the pub.

The rear quarters do not appear to have ever been off the car.

Weirdly the sides are not symmetrical.

For example the upper sill/window surround is different.

Attached File  IMG_6405.jpeg   148.21K   5 downloads

Attached File  IMG_6406.jpeg   174.33K   5 downloads

Passenger side nearly 2mm wider than drivers side.

Simple 70s Kwality? Cant imagine this was deliberate.

To be honest I think +/- 5mm would have been within tolerance in those days.

Cheers

Especially with the size of the presses they were using.

Doors finished. For now anyway….

The roof has been a bit of a saga. It had lost a lot of shape from having the sunroof and associated roof brace delete for the last 25+ years.

Despite bracing it up into position while welding the patch into the hole the roof ended up quite a lot flatter in profile than it should have been.

Its hard to appreciate in isolation and my guy doing the bodywork hasn't done a hatch before so didn't quite appreciate the deviation from factory.

Attached File  IMG_5977.jpeg   106.18K   6 downloads

Not easy to show in a pic….

Fortunately I have access to another unmolested hatch so we made a giant cardboard template.

Attached File  Attachment 3.jpeg   68.65K   4 downloads

Attached File  Attachment 7.jpeg   82.16K   5 downloads

And it’s come into shape quite nicely. A bit more metal finishing to go but getting very close.

Good to see he's taking the time to review along the way and make those corrections. Must be a few hours clocked up on this now. When are you hoping to be in a position for final paint?

Hi Brett,

As you know, this is a slow expensive process… Its slower and more expensiver as I have a very good eye for detail and I figure I might as well get it done to a high standard as I know it would annoy me later if I didnt.

Fortunately the guy I have doing this also has an eye for detail and is happy to do what I want detail wise. I pop in every week to see the car and talk about progress and any issues or questions he has.

Once the roof is finalised it will be one colour again before all the hanging stuff comes off. More work on the not easily seen parts of the car and engine bay before reassembly, final alignment etc then apart again for proper paint. At a guess 6-8 weeks?

Having done a couple of cars in recent years it always seems to take twice as long as I anticipate….

I think this is because of the quality of workmanship that is expected from panel beaters these days.  Gone are the days where you could hide a quick job with a bit of bog.

For the moment its looking more like a car again.

Stuff goes on and comes off again with regularity. Now finalising gaps around the rear on the car. A couple of the flares will require a bit of heat to get them to sit where they should without being under tension.

My man does like a full length body line…..

I have told him it wont be making the cut in its current form.

Roof now 95% correct.
