Hi all
I currently have a set of hub adaptors to take torana stud pattern to commodore stud pattern ( changes offset as well ). Now these are adaptors, not spacers, which have 5 holes to bolt onto the original hub and there are 5 studs to hold the correct commodore wheel.

My question is 'Are adaptors legal?'

Ive heard so much saying that spacers are illegal and hub adaptors are legal but have never really seen it in writing. Ive found a good rta rules page http://www.rta.nsw.g.../vsi09_rev4.pdf that states that

The fitment of wheel spacers (or adaptors for dual wheel conversions) between the wheel mounting face
and the road wheel is not permitted unless fitted as original equipment by the vehicle manufacturer.

Now this states adaptors for dual wheel conversions, not for different stud patterns. Im going to email [email protected] to see what they say. Does anyone have any more info?

the rta got back to me and this is their reply

Julian,

Engineers certification will be needed for these items to be fitted legally.

The reason being, on page 4 of VSI 9, it states under the heading of "Additional requirements for replacement wheels":

"The wheel must be one designed for the particular hub/axle in respect to bolt pitch circle diameter and wheel nut tapers".

The fitment of these adapters then indicates that the wheel is one not designed for the vehicle hub/axle.

I don't think that reply would stand up to much scrutiny. The two areas they bring into question, ie PCD and wheel nut taper would both be addressed in the design of the adaptor. The adaptor if made for Commodore stud pattern would by definition be designed for 'the wheel', and the wheel nut tapers are up to the rim and wheel nuts used, provided the studs are of a suitable length.

I'd say that if you got written confirmation from the adaptor manufacturer that the adaptors were designed to suit Commodore centre hub, PCD, stud pattern and stud length, and were strong enough for the job, then you'd be OK.

The change of offset should not be an issue as long as your wheel track is not exceeded.

Interesting!!

But in the wrong section... I'll move it to the wheels and tyres section. Cheers

Dangerous has hit the nail on the head. I'm sure they just need to know that they have been properly made and not a dodgy backyard job. Shouldn't be any problem.

Proper load carrying hubs/adapters are legal but you still need an engineers certificate is what I was told as I had a set made by Gavsport.

Do they make adaptors to go from Torana to HQ stud pattern?, are they easy to fit and remove?. Id love to get a set of 14" GTS rims and be able to change back to my Torana mags aswell, is it viable?

15" GTS rims would look pretty sweet to. :D
