i was just at the servo and decided to fill the torry right up for the week as petrol was reasonably cheap. I filled it right up, more than usual and took off. 50 metres down the road it just died.

Still had spark. Pulled air filter off and found the carby filling up with petrol. The jets were still dripping, and the front butterflys had a fair bit of petrol sitting on top of them.

It eventually started by holding my foot flat to the floor. I got it home but as soon as a let go of the throttle it died.

I'm almost certain its got something to do with the extra fuel in the tank, as well as a part i removed a few weeks ago. It was that UFO shaped thing just in front of the carby, running in the fuel line, and has a second little pipe sticking out of it which i think goes to return line? Wasn't sure, got told to remove it.

Any help would be great as I have to drive the bastard to work tomorrow... :furious:

Cheers.

i doubt it i more likely think a bit of crap or something must have blocked your needle and seat and holding your float high

ok on the front of your carby you will see the fuel bowl, on the top in the middle is the the needle and seat, it will look like a nut with a screw in the middle. undo the screw 1/4 of a turn and then undo the "nut" if you keep turning it the whole thing will eventually come loose, all you need to do is pull it up and when you get it out youll notice how theres what looks like a tube with the sides cut out with something inside of it, make sure that the little thing moves freely, if so then put it back together, reset the float and hopefully it should be all good, good luck and if im wrong well then youve learnt something new :spoton:

Had a look on the Holley website. It says a whole lot of stuff about inverting the fuel bowl and adjusting the float tang to the point where the float surface is parallel to the fuel bowl surface. No Idea!

Might just try what LX8VD69 said... I get how to check the needle and seat (I think) but still not to sure about how to reset the float level...

Cheers.

You'll need 2 people to do this!
Unscrew the little bung on the side of the float bowl and start the engine ( turn on the fuel pump if its electric). You should see fuel JUUUSt trickle out the hole if the level is right. If it pours out its too high, if nothing comes out its too low.

TO adjust: Use teh correct size screwdriver and spanner. Release the locking screw witht eh screwdriver.. then turn the nut to raise or lower the level as needed.. then lock the screw back down!

I dont know which way raises or lowers the level though!

Good luck!

yeah there was about three little bits of crap on the needle. put it back together, all sweet! (And I got to work on time!)

Thanks for that info tiny, will do that this arvo. Had a go at the fuel level yesterday but wasn't sure where it was supposed to be.

Cheers.

P.S: I put a new speedo guage in the other day as my odometer never worked. It seems that I'm getting 4kms/L or 25L/100km. Is that normal?

Ummm.. if it's a worked 400 chev.. then yes.. ( thats around the milage i get from my monaro!!). Otherwise.. NO!!

Defintiely something wrong in your fuel system there mate, I'd suggest paying a little bit of money and taking it to a specialist who can tune the car propperly with the carby! Otherwise its just money out the tailpipe!

half a tank by your guage or did it take 27.5L at the servo?

I got better economy than that when I had the 650 on mine

either switch to a smaller carb or wear lighter boots.

could it be that the floats are set too high?

cheers.

lets put that into perspective I (makka) drove from Bendigo to sandown, over 200km, did my parade laps and stuff and I drove gto the servo and it took 30l, it was full when I left from bendi, thats pretty good

thats amazing! i would go through at least a whole tank after 200 kms...

i reset my floats yesterday. time will tell if it made any difference :<_<:

booking it in for a gas conversion within the next few weeks anyway so i only have to put up with it for while, i hope.

cheers.

I was suprised at how good it was as well, as I was into it a bit on the way down and chasing Knoath through the traffic so I didnt get lost!

i dont think you will get much joy.
if its not running rich and you get that economy then the motor is sad and i think you will get no joy out of stopping more frequently for gas than you are stopping for fuel now, i know, i sold a duel fuel VC commy with blue 253 for that very reason.
