I am still locating the problem noise I have when turning at full lock in carparks.
I took my car into pedders again and they have suggested my front mounts may be worn however I have replaced the rubbers.

Should the metal tubing on these front mounts be a tight fit on the bolts? or are they ment to just sit over the bolt without being a tight fit? They dont look to be a tight fit to me, however they guys a pedders have suggested movement in these mounts may be causing the noise I am trying to locate.

Do you have standard wheels and tyres? A front spoiler and flares? The tyres can sometimes rub at full lock on the inner edge of the flares at full lock...

is the noise like a "donk" sort of like you run over a stick and it flicked up and hit the spring?
I hate that noise, WTF is it?

Hey Guys,

ALX76 seems to know the noise I have.
Yep I do have 14 inch wheels and a standard SS front spoiler, however the noise is definately sounds like a spring noise. Im at my wits end to find out what this problem is.
Some guys have stated in other topics, Pedders springs may not seat correctly due to a larger spring wire being used - Is this a correct statement?? as I have pedders lowered suspension in my car.

THe noise only occurs when the wheels are returning from full lock to strait ahead so movement in the spring is all I can put it down to.

Then it won't be the spring. If it happens during suspension travel, then it might be some spring squeak. I would suggest a bit of wear in one or both of the bottom balljoints.

if it happens when turning, then i would suspect the steering rack perhaps. would have a look if the steering rack is loose, steering coupling and as chopper said ball joints maybe tirrod ends...

I would've guessed ball joints too, but I'm surprised pedders didn't pick it up if that's the case. I drove a Bedford into the local pedders get out and he said "You'd be after ball joints", he picked the noise on lock as I drove in.

The problem with testing ball joints is that most if not all places check them with the wheels in the straight ahead position. They are under the least load there. They are under more load while cornering, which is why they need to be checked with the wheels close to full lock.

Cheers Guys,
I dont think it would be the ball joints as these were also replaced when the pedders suspension and new lower control arms were put in. I have not replaced the steering rack so I will get it checked out.
Many thanks
Matt

what about the bushes that hold the steering rack in position?
I would also check that the steering arm to stub axle bolts are tight and for that matter also the ball joint nuts on upper and lower control arms.

another thing could be the brakes or brake line hitting the upper control arm, that is if you have different brakes e.g HQ-HZ

also if you look under the lower control arms there is a hole about 6mm where the end of the spring coil goes. if the spring is not in the correct position it will make a banging sort of noise quite often.
get a torch and look into the hole if you see the end of the coil all is good. if you cant turn the spring around a bit

I recently fitted a Hopper Stoppers brake kit to my LX which involved swapping the stub axles. When I first backed out of the drive the springs made a noise similar to what you are describing as they settled back into place.

Hi,
Sounds familiar, my LX has a similar clunk niose,
took a while to track,
in this case,
on the drivers side, where the front end mounts to the body / chassis under the drivers side floor near the gearbox. (dont know the correct term for this part)
is related to worn mounts in the engine bay, (front end to chassis rails)
The clunk noise in my case is this mounting rubber has play in it, and makes a noise when the car is turned to lock (right) and when you turn the wheels straight again.

Possible fix, replace the mounting rubbers, and bolts.

Cheers
Chris

Had a similar noise in mine, traced it to the spring locating in the groove of the cross member. After market springs are usually shorter and the spring moves arround a bit. I put nylon spacer above the spring and it went away.

have a look at where the k frame outriggers mount the chassis. sometimes the steel reinforcement comes away from the rails. i have tig tacked mine back into place. (the back ones not the 4 on top)
