Yep, they're meant to be a fairly tight fit. Usually need to tap them on with a mallet (without damaging the balancer of course!)

id say a lil tight, enough for the bolt to pull it on is ok, but very tight, i might contact the maker before you damage your crank.

The standard balancers are loose in comparison to most aftermarket ones, that's what I've found anyway, but I've never pulled one off a 253/308 before.

1. Lightly oil the shaft
2. Tap it on a little bit with a rubber mallet, or something soft so as not to damage the balancer.
3. Buy another bolt that is longer (1/2 inch or so) than the crank bolt so that you can pull the balancer on the rest of the way.
4. Once the balancer is on most of the way, discard the longer bolt and use the proper crank bolt.

Job's done.

If it only needs a little bit more clearance you could try a hot air gun (High performance hair dryer) and warm up the hub a little.

Might be enough to get it over the key and pull it the rest of the way with the bolt.

My 2c worth.

It should locate correctly and you should not be able to spin it on the crank at all.
Kinda defeats the purpose if it can slip and turn.

I think he mean't that if he didnt have the key & keyway lined up properly he might need to turn the pulley and line them up.

In the instructions for my B&M balancer bought 10 years ago it said to boil the balancer in water to expand the hub before installing. Otherwise I would never get it on. I did it too slowly once and had to take off and redo per the instruction. A bolt to pull it on helps also.
